Description Nothing fancy. I had this sitting on my computer forever and never finished till recently. Orz
I'm trying to work on timing and making movements look more fluid but i don't really know if i'm satisfied with the results but oh well. QUQ I tried.

Frame count: 44
Tools: Sai, AzDrawing2
Time taken: lost count but probably like 2 hours on the sketch and 15 hours on the lineart/cleanup

wOW!!! This is actually really amazing.
I love how she falls, and the dress follows it. And I love how you made the foot move realistically. Also the hair. The hair goes smoothly, how she falls forward and the hair goes back, and how she sits and her hair moves in front then goes back to its original spot.

I also love her expression and how her face shows thats she is shocked.
But as she falls I could see a small little smile xD

But any who, it is really good.
But maybe next time, try to give a little detail, like when she falls, and her hands touch her dress, maybe add a bit of wrinkle.

oVERALL, its rEALLY GOOd
Keep this up, I love your work!

You've definitely got the gesture right here, and I know this seems to be more of a rough first draft type thing, but there are a few things that bug me here, and working on those areas could help this animation look a little more natural.

Starting with vision, you've got the basic gesture of the animation down very well. That is definitely the right kind of motion, however there could be a little more done to make the motion more fluid, such as when she first falls forward to sit down, making the torso and perhaps the upper legs as well bend more forward, since if you act out this sort of action yourself you will continue to go forward because of inertia. (I highly recommend recording someone or yourself doing the motion you are trying to animate if you can, and seeing how they move. This has helped me a lot, so try it if you can!) The same sort of thing can be said with the upper legs and knees, since the moment they hit the ground, they are at the final angle. This makes the figure seem very stiff, since when someone is bending their knees, they typically bend lower than the final angle before they get to the final angle they will be at.

Originality here is fine. It's a pretty basic animation, and I do like how you put the character in a dress, since those types of clothes are very "flowy" and show motion very well when animated correctly. However, there is another problem there, also having to do with inertia. The dress when the girl falls forward on her knees should also go forward a bit after she lands. I also like the shoes since they're form fitting and help see how the foot moves better than say, tennis shoes.

Technique-wise, there are some issues(including the inertia thing), and I'd like to focus especially on the technique of "squash and stretch". This is a technique first employed by Disney to make their animations look more fluid and realistic, and it worked very well- so well that this is taught in almost all animation textbooks and courses. It's a difficult technique to get right at first, but it is totally worth it. The prime example is long hair for squash and stretch, which is somewhat absent in the hair here, since the hair seems to just go upwards when falling forward, but doesn't go forward here when it would typically do so because of the sudden stop in motion.

I gave impact the lowest rating because this didn't really impact me all too much. The first thing I saw was "oh, this must be a super rough animation" because of the absence of the response to movement (and the sudden stop of it) that flowing or flying objects have. It really doesn't seem that this is natural- she looks rather robotic because of this. But with a little more effort and a little more studying of what you're going for looks like, this could be great!

Thank you! This helps a lot. I guess I just need more practice QuQ I alway want to film someone as ref but I'm too shy to ask orz. I'm still trying to work the squash and stretch but since I self-study animation, im not entirely sure what the hell in doing. Orz but thank you for this helpful crit!

No problem! I felt like I was being super critical there merp, but man I love animation and I love other people doing animation and it's a fantastic thing to do, even though it's difficult to figure out! I also still need more practice, but hey, let's all help each other out, right?

My friends are usually totally willing to be filmed to help with animation, but that's cuz they know I animate and think it's super cool, so if you have anyone who knows you animate and stuff ask them. Being shy sucks and being not shy is hard but give it a go, you've got nothing to lose c:

Secondary action looks really nice, line work is clean, and you definitely kept body proportions consistent, so great job with those elements. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/c… " width="20" height="20" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="60" title="Clap"/>

I feel like the timing between the fall and the sit could be a little faster, though, and maybe you could have more drawings to act as a cushion between those two points so her body isn't completely motionless when she's on her knees. Right now the movement looks a little robotic because of that. Also, I don't think her hands would fly out to the side as she falls. They'd probably swing back and forward as the drag of the motion acts on them (if you act out this motion yourself, the hands moving forward and back will probably feel more natural). I also noticed that her right leg disappears completely after she falls (keeping it would add more depth to the drawing) and that during the first few drawings of the sit action, her hand flicks back and forward again even though there's no drag acting on it to make it move back in the first place.

But other than that, this is a great start. You've got a nice-looking animation here, and they can only get nicer with each one you make!
Hope this helps! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="334" title="Nod"/>

Great animation overall, but I think applying a bit of squash would help. Her upper torso and head seems a bit too rigid when she hits the ground - I reckon her head and upper torso would continue their forward momentum for a bit before settling. Same goes for when she sits. And I'm just being picky here, but I feel the skirt flies a bit too high when she falls into her sitting position

HOWEVER i've been following you for ages and i love your work so please forgive me for pretending to know how to animate T_T

I'm amazed that you drew all of these frame by frame (even the still parts/moments were drawn repeatedly, if I'm not mistaken)

I guess the hands were just too fluid during the first falling part...
(It gave that falling cloth feeling)

I like that soft, flowing movement of the hair.
And the skirt... wow! XD The breeze really went through inside, as if it's the real thing.
The gravity or weight of her fall is really felt in the animation.

If you ask me, the movement look like Miyazaki style e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>
(Not completely, but almost the same fluidity)

Overall, it's really good e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
I love it!

Good secondary animation on both the dress and hair. Also you kept proportions of the body. Nice touch with the face animation at the end. The dress is well animated with the cresses when the character sits down. This is great only some small nit picks.

I Think that the feet and legs feel like the slightly grow as the animation goes on. Also the arms are suddenly stop when she gets on her knees may be a tiny bit more secondary animation on the arms. Finally a bit touch secondary animation on the dress when she leans back.
(Im only an animation student so take this with a pinch of salt.)

The little swoosh of her dress when he sits fully would only rly happen if she hadn't of stopped when she fell to her knees ^^

Or if the wind were blowing...

But the animation is still beautiful and the way the fabric moves is still on point

(this is also an OLD animation I see, but it's still SO awesome TT-TT)

This is weird bc I read one of the crits and I think the opposite in reference to the legs. It looks like her calves get shorter. Also the skirt seems to get longer when she finally sits. In addition, because its initially just above knee length I dont think itd touch the ground once she fully sat. Also I think there is too much movement in it as she sits. But thatd really depend on the fabric you were imagining her in.

I like the way her dress and hair flows and its over all very nice everything is rather fluid except her shoulder. I think the pacing is nice good too. I like the timing of her sitting. xx

batbow In reply to Nachooz [2014-09-26 18:54:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, you may say that but speed lines and angles do not an animation make.

Don't get me wrong, it's quite clear that you have the raw drawing skill to make an animation but just putting lines indicating the direction of motion on the drawing and then claiming that it's animated is just no substitute for actual animation.

Eitherway I think that what you've done is pretty amazing and I hope that continue to develop your skills.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nachooz In reply to batbow [2014-09-27 15:26:30 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, I don't quite understand? If a picture is in motion, then it is animation regardless of their animating skills; it might not be a "good" animation or an entirely convincing one but it is animation nonetheless. And there are no speed lines. please don't disregard it as an animation. I work hard enough on it to feel a little insulted that it can't even be considered an animation.

I don't think I have enough to write a full critique, but I think what it's missing is, see how when she first drops to her knees, her body is VERY rigid. I think there needs to be a little follow through and then corrections in her posture.

I'm not really an animator, but working in Storyboard Pro I always have the urge to put in more frames so my actions read better. One day I'll make the time to try and animate some little actions like this. Anyway, but what helped me on Legend of Korra was video reference of how people actually move. So maybe, film a friend or have a friend film you doing this motion and study that?

Looks good though!
