I think the slogan Bethesda chose for marketing the game is misleading. The game's not about revenge. You're in the middle of a conflict of interests in a kingdom facing plague and decease. It's completely up to Corvo (the player) whether he kills everyone else or just his targets. The only "revenge" I can imagine is killing the very people who kidnapped the princess and killed the queen.
