Description
~~~~~~~~~~~~"Between snow capped mountains, and through the frozen shadows, over fields of snow and ice, they staggered on tirelessly till they reached their reward. The first glimpses of the Pinnacle cities, stabbing at the belly of the clouds, illuminated in gold by the frozen dawning sun."
~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a whole lot of fun to work on and play with! I've taken a lot of the techniques I've learnt recently and applied them to an original piece (some areas of ir work better than others.) Overall I'm pretty pleased with this. I have the desired scale and atmosphere and the image tells a story in it's own right... my little written piece is just a bit more creativity lol.
I honestly don't really know how long this took me, I started it some time last week, then came back to it a couple of days ago.. Maybe 6 hours?
All done on PS CS5
Full view is recommended, please let me know what you think

Heh, thanks very much. Went through an almost continuous load of changes. I set up the basic layout of it, then changed almost all of it through the painting process lol... glad it's come out well though

Good, glad it can inspire!
until recently I always had SO much trouble drawing landscapes and backgrounds... A few things that help me break that though. Stop viewing it as a background, focus on one main element of the landscape, and approach in it a similar way to a character image, then grow the rest of land out from it. I also started out by working VERY roughly, use the PS standard chalk brush (looks a little like an oblong sponge) that helps to create a rough sense (almost 100% of this picture was done using it.) One of the main things that helped me was the use of some select references, and remembering that in an alien/fantasy landscape, it doesn't have to make 'sense' but if you bring in some recognisable shapes, that helps to keep it looking realistic.
One of the best things you can do is watch a tutorial video, and paint along side to it, maybe don't paint exactly the same thing, but look at how they build up on their roughs, and learn better how to put an image together (even if you spend more time with the video paused, catching up with them and digesting what they're doing lol )

yeah i watched that vid you liked too a bit back. was really good and i picked up some tips of blocking things out roughly first from that. my latest WIP i posted has a rough background in that I'm hoping to develop.

hehehe, Yeah Feng is a bit of a master lol. following any/as many of his tuts is probably a very good idea, pushed up my quality quickly, though I still have a ways to go. I'll have a look at your new piece now

yeah he's amazing. i want to look up more stuff some composure, he dose it well but doesn't explain composure and that's the main point i fall down at i think.
