The candles are a very nice touch! They definitely complement the Chaplain's role as a spiritual leader. Can't say they'd stay on for very long in the heat of battle though XD

Another thing, I think you'll never find a chaplain under 200 or 300 years

In the books "Heroes of the Space Marines" there a short story about a Crimson Fist chaplain who is around 30 to 60 years old
Anyway I my opinion it mostly differs from Chapter to Chapter. Some Chaplains are selected for their ferocity and other by wisdom and knowledge.

Well yeah, becoming a man responsible for the spiritual well-being of an entire chapter takes some trial and effort...how did Morchen get there anyway? XD

Oh well, after his training as aspirant they saw he had excellent close combat skills, so he became a company champion.
Replacements for chaplains will be chose from the chapter master and his mentors and the chapter ghosts of course) before they become a chaplain. If the current chaplain die so the future chaplains make a special edjucation. In this time a chaplain from another company carry on the functions and duties from the chapter without a chaplain.
I didn't work much on the fluff how or better "why" MΓΆrchen was chosen for this...
