She is a guardian of the gateway to Atlantis. A fierce warrior who nontheless loves peace more than to fight.
Her muted colours of the ocean make her next to invisible until she is near enough to strike.
She guards the secret gateway from humans who her folk despises and dreads.
If humans where ever to discover their secrets they might wipe them from the face of the planet for good,
like they thought they did long ago. So long ago, that they are but a mere legend in our world of today.

Finally after an huge artists block (partially due to health and several rl issues causing a heap of stress) I got this artwork done. I prolly revamped the materials used several times and redid things umpteen times before I was ready to upload it. I didn't want to do the typical long-haired mermaid. Why? well I thought long hair might be rather unpractical underwater and though I like those mermaids too I rather thought of a creature more adapted to a life deep down. Maybe the fins aren't that harmless as they look but have some of the tips and points rather poisonous as a lions fish? Maybe more of a merelf than a mermaid... whatever it is... let your imagination run wild......

Thanks for each and every . I have come to a point where it gets impossible to thank for all the faves personally.
Though I feel a little guilty, I rather take the time to create new art you hopefully will enjoy and which hopefully will inspire
you, give you a smile at the right time, and work on my Project AWW, helping the true Angels get recognised for their
kindness, than being continuously 1000+ messages behind.
Be assured I am really and deeply grateful for every single fave and I will continue to answer any comment given.

 you all

I really like the thinking behind this creation - especially being "a wepon herself) - as in the manta-ray (also known as the sting-ray)...

Nameda In reply to Arte-de-Junqueiro [2014-07-24 18:06:03 +0000 UTC]

or lion fish yep glad you noticed that
(though the Manta rays are mostly peaceful zooplankton eaters without barbs and the stingray as small, but dangerous creature with barbs feeding on fish, snails, clams and shrimps)

I love the details on the Siren's crest, gills and tail, they really seem to float as rumble fishes (and others) have that silk quality... Don't mess with her, as she is beautiful she is also dangerous!
I would love to see another version holding a more powerful weapon like a spear similar to the ones we usual see on Tritons, since see is a Guardian. Congratulations for this wonderful piece.

Nameda In reply to Kay-March [2014-07-24 10:39:40 +0000 UTC]

thanks a lot I was thinking of a spear or trident but that is more for a palace guard I think it would be rather hindering for a swift swimming or stealth attack and with poisonous tips she is a weapon herself

You thought right, as so she as more agility.

Nameda In reply to Kay-March [2014-07-24 12:06:44 +0000 UTC]

indeed, I think some people don't take into consideration how difficult it could be to use a huge weapon against the resistance of the water

Kay-March In reply to Nameda [2014-07-24 18:32:06 +0000 UTC]

That's right, we have this idea of Neptun carrying that big trident... of course he is supposed to be a god but still, it doesn't seem too easy swimming and battle with such a weapon.
And for the siren, her tail would be a powerful weapon too.

Nameda In reply to Kay-March [2014-07-24 19:05:54 +0000 UTC]

Maybe he even does, like a royal insignia, and if like in many movies its a magical weapon throwing rays of magic/electricity its different you don't need to wield such a weapon. But for me it seems more natural that the kind of merfolk that gets warriors /guardians have a natural weapon i.e. poisinous fins strong tailfin which can be used like a whip... who knows

Hehe, we have plenty to explore on the wonderful sea-field. I agree with your line of thought too... hummm, indeed we have plenty where to dive our own imagination and create new things to go around with the already existent legends. I hope that you continue to explore it and create more characters based upon them.

Nameda In reply to Kay-March [2014-07-24 21:26:39 +0000 UTC]

We have indeed.
I might its often a matter of matching stock, if you can't directly paint what is in your head (soul)
I looked through a "gazillion" (yep I exxagerate a little :giggle)  models till I found her. And her look and that she had no hair and that striking and a little haunting look of that model (plus fair rules and a decent big size) was like thats it search done

Yeah, the photomanipulation is thrilling but the good ones have a lot of work and skill upon, (my personal view) I appreciate seing the differnces between the originals and what was done... amazing!!

ridiculous isn't it? To make good or even fantastic manips you have to know about perspective, light, shadow, composition as any other artist too. Plus you have to know how to blend things together to make it work and look believable. The one rule I ignored her (on purpose) is the rules of thirds.

But, than again, what is art and what not? *shrugs* some  stuff that I wouldn't even by far call art sells for ridiculous prizes, whilst wonders of pure art  no matter what medium don't sell at all.

DMD-CT [2014-07-23 17:04:10 +0000 UTC]

This is actually more accurate to what mermaids would look like if they were real. They weren't the stereotypical beautiful maidens with long flowing hair like in the Disney movie. There was recently a documentary about creatures that were discovered in the deep that resemble a mermaid and they looked very similar to this, so good job!

Nameda In reply to DMD-CT [2014-07-23 17:38:49 +0000 UTC]

really? cool! Didn't know that! I just thought it would be highly impractical to get your hair tangled in corals, reefs, and else. Plus I imagined them more fishlike (like having gills) maybe bot even a nose like we have, but more flat
