Description ORIGINAL, COMPARA DIFERENCIAS // ORIGINAL, COMPARE THE DIFFERENCES:

MORE REDRAWS:

_________

We know that Steven Universe is one of the few animated series where the design of the characters in each scene or shot is VERY LITTLE RESPECTFUL, which sometimes makes us see that the characters look different in almost every new scene, sometimes their design varies, its portions, head size, shape, or simply some detail in them changes.
Personally, it bothers me to see these sudden jumps in the drawing within the animation. One of the ones that bothered me the most was Spinel in the movie, since it was constantly drawn differently (not by the way) you could tell it was an animation error (or maybe when changing animators, the design changed a bit)

So I decided to do some Redraws of Scenes with Spinel but now CORRECTLY DRAWN (Or as we were presented with her design the first time that she appeared. Her design is round face, her eyebrows dark (Being part of her forehead, and not part of her light face color), thick black tears, dark circles under her black tears, and 2 semi-long pigtails with pointed ends (not too circular)

Here is my first redraw trying to draw her correctly.

Once you work in the animation industry, you'll understand why these mistakes happen in hand-drawn animation.

So tell me why Disney movies and series don't have those errors?? eheheh

Assuming Disney is and was (when they made hand drawn animation) a much bigger company with a lot more money than Cartoon Network, errors are more rare. (They still exist:  i.imgur.com/7Sy8k.jpg)

The more money a company has, the bigger the budgets they can give to whatever big animation studios they want. I think it’s fair to assume the two overseas studios animating for Steven Universe are not as big as the Disney Animated Studios.

Steven Universe is prone to these errors because it’s one of the few contemporary Western Cartoons that are hand-drawn.

The Amazing World of Gumball is Puppet Animation, SU is Hand-drawn animation.

It’s easier to make and find mistakes in hand-drawn animation than it is in puppet animation, because the artists are drawing frame after frame after frame.

Adventure Time is hand-drawn, but has a much simpler style and character designs than that of Steven Universe, so it’s easier for Adventure Time to stay on-model.

Over The Garden Wall is more detailed, but it is a mini series, and the less episodes you have, the more opportunities you have with your limited budget; A studio could spend more time and work on the backgrounds or animation, because it’s not as long as, say, the first season of Steven Universe.

Doing a redraw of a single frame in a full-length movie is very feasible for one person.

The Movie is 82 minutes long.

The average animation framerate is 24 frames per second, meaning there are approximately 118080 frames in the movie, so this production needs more than one person.

Let’s say you’re going to work on the Steven Universe Movie.

You could be a Storyboard artist at the Cartoon Network studio, and you make a thumbnail that looks like this. It might look pretty simple and sketchy because you want to meet the deadline, and you have many more thumbnails to finish:  i.redd.it/jc2cgpiqmka11.png

You could be an animator at one of the studios overseas, and you might make something that looks off-model, because all you have to work with is a sketchy storyboard and your model sheets (or maybe no model sheet! Maybe only the colour artists have that):  pm1.narvii.com/7068/6cfff081ac…

You are in a studio halfway across the globe, so there is probably bound to be some miscommunication, and maybe this mistake was already pointed out, but the deadline was approaching so there wasn’t time to fix it.

Steven Universe looks very different from typical Western Animation, and I think it’s because the approach to production and style (Emphasis on verbal interaction, fantasy fight scenes, detailed character design and character development) SU takes is pretty similar to that of Anime productions, which are NOTORIOUS for having errors:  i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/o…

When I worked on my graduation film and we spent too long making something look perfect, we were kind of forced to rush the remainder. Even before the film was finished, we could find little mistakes everywhere, but if we took the time to fix them, we would never have the film finished for the deadline. In industry, you have to show what you have on the deadline, no matter how many errors. If it’s exceedingly bad or completely unfinished, it probably means the contract with the studio is over.

This is a very long message, but I don’t mean to sound rude or pretentious. I just really want to get rid of the online myth that the studios working on Steven Universe are lazy, when the truth is that working in the animation industry is alot of pressure.

How sad that Steven Universe has so many animation errors, just having created puppets would have greatly improved the stuff. Honestly so many errors in the animation, they stain the series. Personally, I don't like it.

I think there are pros and cons to both hand drawn and puppet.

Puppet animation is used a lot in animated series that focus more on verbal interaction rather than character action and fight scenes. Its the best technique to save time and money, like on a Netflix show: media.giphy.com/media/xT9IggwS…

I'm happy Steven Universe is hand drawn because we get to see fluid animation like this: www.sakugabooru.com/data/41ae8…

Animation like that is possible with Puppet Animation, but it would probably take more time to animate something like that in puppet animation, because the point in puppet animation is moving around drawings you've already made, and animating something like this would only mean making more drawings.

The Tangled series and Lion Guard series prove that puppet animation can look good and fluid, but this is Disney, and at this point, I believe they are the biggest and richest entertainment company in the world right now, so they can achieve more than a Netflix show: www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/…

I'm personally not bothered by the minor mistakes in Steven Universe because, even if I do notice them, it never takes me out of the experience.

yaaaa if steven universe has one glaring flaw it's how poor the animation is at keeping characters consistent, it's honestly really annoying sometimes
