Entry for the "Creature in Me" contest.This is *devils-horizon 's character, Northernlights.
I ended up chosing this character (as part of one of the themes we could go with was to choose one of the contest hosts' characters) because it was so colorful and unique. I don't think I've ever seen a horse so brightly colored and thought it would be wonderful to photomanip that. I always try to have a bit of fantasy in my horse manips and the colors immediately made me think of some fantastical realm.
<3 This was fun, but I started freaking out at first when I tried to make the background dark... lets just say the first few attempts didn't go well.
download for giant version. it's great for details like the eyes and a few other things, but you can also see my crappy sloppiness and mistakes. *fail*

Yeah, the more I look at it, the more I'm not liking it. I mean, if you just cover up the area beneath the horse, it looks fine but I'm thinking more and more that it either needs to be obviously glowing (like a bright light around the ground) or a shadow. Thanks for the suggestion and for the wonderful stock!
I saw those clouds and the mountains in the distance and my eyes about fell out of my skull. I knew it was perfect for the ground I had chosen and I'm pretty picky when it comes to clouds. <3 It's a wonderful photo and the atmosphere is great.

I wasn't sure on the shadow. I started it it for awhile last night and decided not to (mostly out of lazyness) because the horse was glowing and should be mostly light underneath... but I don't know. It doesn't really seem to connect with the ground without the shadow. Hmm...

Yeah, I find shadows difficult to do sometimes aswell, depending on the angle of the creature and the background its on :/
If you think it looks odd then leave it, because even without the shadow it still looks good (but like you said, it doesn't connect with the ground). Maybe put one up with a shadow and have a poll or something?

yeah, I might upload a shadowed version just for kicks, or just alter this one if I think the shadow looks better.
