Description This is a wood nymph!! (I'd say she is a dryad like Leuce. She probably turns into a white poplar tree.)

I wanted to draw something before 2008 came to an end. So I drew the wood nymph on December 31st, added micron lines to it yesterday (Jan 2, 2009) and then colored it this morning. The colors took up every edge of my 8.5x11in print paper.

Other than that, this wood nymph has no real story to her. She's not a character in one of my stories or anything, I just felt like drawing a nymph because I was like "Hey, I draw minotaurs, harpies, mermaids, reptilian creatures of some kind, sphinxes, cecaelias, personified elemental gods, and other mythical creatures... so like why haven't I drawn any nymphs?!!?" So there. I drew a nymph. I think she's a nice nymph, she doesn't look evil and she's smiling.

...My mom called her pigeon-toed.

(I like Greek/Roman/Egyptian/Aztec/Celtic/etc mythology a lot.)

.:Technical Stuff:.
Tools Used:
- 8.5x11in Print Paper
- Some pencils
- Micron Ink Pens (005, 03, & 08)
- Variety of Copic Markers
- Printer/Scanner/Copier
- HP Solutions Program
- Bitmap MS (Microsoft) Paint
First I drew the lines in pencil. Only the Wood nymph, I don't draw backgrounds. Then I used my printer/copier and copied the image twice. (I thought I might need the second copy.) Then I microned the lines on the print out and added more details to it from there. Then I used my printer/copier again and copied the microned version and used that for my Copics. (I used the space pencil copy to figure out which copic colors to use, lol.) Many pieces of paper were ruined by copic bleeding in the making of this drawing.
Time Spent:
- 35 minutes for the pencils.
- Probably around 15 to 45 minutes for the microns, I didn't keep track.
- 3 hours for copic coloring.
A word about my resources:
All right, since I'm stuck with using my mom's computer, I'm forced to use her computer's resources as well if I want to post some art up. So usually my stuff gets scanned at 200 dpi because my laptop can take it. But my mom's computer is old and slow so I had to scan this image at 100 dpi. And since I don't have my photoshop to manually fix the colors, since my scanner sucks about presenting color, I had to use the scanner's scan settings to at least try to scan the image close to it's original colors. ...I MISS MY LAPTOP!
Other Tidbits:
- The detailed wood lines were drawn in when I was lining with microns.
- I wanted her dress to be teal, and a little darker but I'm only limited by the copic markers I have.
- I was inspired by an Amy Brown piece. Her Water Element to be exact. I have a pin of it and was looking at it when I drew the wood Nymph. Small pin is small.
- I wanted to make an elaborate art piece but didn't want to ruin the lines of my wood nymph so I didn't take it any further.
- I was going to draw another mountain to the right of her, but I forgot it was supposed to be there. Lol, oops.
- I know she's not proportionately correct, but if you looked at my style, I like drawing ladies with long legs, puffy hair, small waists and big hips and/or thighs.

What do you mean tree-ish? I see them tree-ish often! Thanks for your comment; I'm glad you like it!

I suppose your right, but I like the way you've done it especially. x3 Usually I see them coming out of the trunk of a tree, rather than tree limbs.

Welcome!

Oh thanks I just imagine when they turn into trees, they should start from their ends, therefore fingertips and toes should turn into wood first I suppose the leaves start coming in when she's nearly fully a tree trunk.

And I believe there is one myth where nymphs are tied to a tree for life, so they live as long as a tree does. They usually live in the area that their tree is in. That's probably why you might see them coming out of trunks so often. Just my guess.

Yesh! water is my favourite element as well.

Yeah! they're cute. >w< Reminds me of Hercules, the disney version. xD
Dryads are snots in the book series I read though, the novels of Xanth.

I don't know why, but Xanth... the name makes me think of this one time my dad gave me a book about centaurs. Do you have any idea what books out there could have centaurs in them? I've been trying to find that novel for a while, I just don't know the name

Teefie In reply to NanasFreak [2009-01-04 03:45:54 +0000 UTC]

Hmmn~ there's a lot of them (the Xanth Novels) that have centaurs. They all have centaurs, actually. At least some mention of them. Maybe Centaur Isle? That one is focused on centaurs, I believe... hmmn.. I think chester centuar is in Ogre Ogre....

NanasFreak In reply to Teefie [2009-01-04 03:49:18 +0000 UTC]

Lol, now I definitely have to check out that Xanth series Any other novels or series you might know of with centaurs in them?

Teefie In reply to NanasFreak [2009-01-04 03:52:22 +0000 UTC]

Hmmn.... not really. None off th-- OH!
I don't know if there's centaurs exactly in these, but I think you'd like them if you like fantasy/myth stuff, the Darkangele series, by Meredith Ann Pierce

NanasFreak In reply to Teefie [2009-01-04 04:00:49 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I took a look at them through Wiki, both sound pretty interesting. I'll have to see if they're in a library nearby or something now Thanks a lot ofr the suggestions. Unfortunately I can't suggest fantasy/myth stuff, only Cirque Du Freak (by Darren Shan) and Daughters of the Moon (by Lynne Ewing) come to mind Although, I don't know if they're considered fantasy/myth

Is Daughters of the Moon any good? I was looking into reading it.

And you're welcome!

NanasFreak In reply to Teefie [2009-01-04 04:09:33 +0000 UTC]

Well I really enjoyed reading it. I didn't like her series, Sons of the Dark though, the guys all seemed like pansies trying to be macho, lol. She uses a a bit of Greek mythology in Dauthers of the Moon, the girls are supposedly related to Selene, the moon goddess, and they all have a special power and they're supposed to use their powers to fight evil. There's flashbacks to ancient Greece in the series. I think the characters are pretty awesome. Hope that helps!
