You say "not much of a difference," but here is the deal. With the style you are trying to do this in, and the character and pose, et cetera, you have nailed it. There isn't "much difference," but that is only relative! The coloring has dramatically improved, and the eyes, don't even get me started! Overall, the second picture is much better!
Besides, for hardly a year of time practicing, this is a wonderful improvement! I think that next time you do something like this, try changing it up just a bit! Maybe a more dynamic pose, or some subtle changes in features - anything to make it your own, a second time. You would notice the differences much more if you did that, and it would only further highlight your wonderful improvement in your artistic walk. Cheers, friend. Keep on - this is wonderful stuff!
