"The Very Model", 2008

*MUST HAVE SPEAKERS ON !!!*

trying to incorporate some humor into my work. ALSO trying to take the next step in animating with fine art.

Im really happy how it turned out. Some of the drawings are a bit sub-par for me, but they work all together

Sorry for the large file... it WAS 4 mb but I shrunk it down considerably, though it lost some of its quality that way

song info:

"The Pirates of Penzance - I am the very model of a modern Major-General"

Performers: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, John Reed, Isidore Godfrey, The D'Oyly Carte Opera Chorus
Composers: Sullivan, Arthur, Gilbert, W.S.
Conductors: Isidore Godfrey

With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse!

Ah, it's been a while since I've heard that lyric. I needed that.

Again to reiterate about every persons comment-this is AMAZING. The work you put in shows. And who can't help but have this guilty love for Pirates of Penzance? Just wondering, what was the thinking on not defining the eyes? Did you want to keep the focus on his mouth or was there some other reason? I think someone else may have said this, but have you heard of William Kentridge?

thanks!
For the eyes: I actually DID draw them in, but later decided that the images looked better (or at least more interesting) with them not focused. Also, I wanted to ensure the focus was on the mouth.

oh... and I only had a week to do all the drawings

AND (lol) Ive been really interested in Bruce Samuelson lately, and not treating everything in the image with the same level of precision/intensity/etc.

This is always hilarious, I must have watched the animation 20 times in a row. It's really smooth and well enough animated that without sound I could sorta figure out where the song was. Amazing work, hope to see more like this!

Its fabulous. I think it is very effective with such a strong attention to detail on the mouth and a loose gestured face.

have you heard of william kentridge? i think it would benefit you to research him and his films if you're interested in incorporating animation and drawing like this (and if you haven't already ).

This reminded me of Kentridge as well. Although Kentridge's work is often really depressing while this definately is not.
