Description
Have you ever been dead? Don't answer that. I am and I have been, I guess you could say I'm a zombie or a vampire even. The answer is I'm neither, I am or was an ordinary girl, who lived an ordinary life, with my little less than ordinary family. Life was good until the day of the accident. I guess I should start out in telling you who I am, I'm Nightingale. Yes that's my name, I mostly got by with being called "Night" or "Gale" I was born in Limerick, Ireland to my Da, Aedan and my Ma, Ciara. We lived a simple life truly along the cliffs of Moher. I loved to sit in Ma's garden and listen to the waves on stormy days. My two older brothers, Aengus and Coilin would go hunting with Da, while I stayed behind with Ma. Together she'd teach me the ways of nature, you see we weren't an ordinary family for reasons. My mother was a child of nature, a witch you may say. All the girls in my family were. It wasn't something we chose because it seemed like fun, you could've been burned alive for it. That's one of the reasons we lived so remotely. It was a usual early spring morning, the day I died. Later the night before I was practicing a nightly ritual when I caught Aengus sneaking out to see his lover, Cathleen. "Where in the hell do ye' think yer goin?" I eyed him smugly and snuffed out my white candle. "Oh ya know out fer a walk, I get restless." He tugged his shirt collar nervously. "Aengus, I know where ye headin' too don't even try to lie to me." He sighed, "I'm sorry Gale." I stood up and took his hand, "At least let me give you some protection." He nodded and sat next to me at the altar. I proceeded to take out Ma's spellbook and several needed items. I preformed the ritual, Aengus taking part. He departed and I went to bed. I had no idea that letting him leave would result in my family's untimely death. The next morning the air hung heavily around the house. I turned to ma in the garden, "The sky looks angry today.." "Aye." she replied ominously, "Come with me perhaps the gods and goddesses can give us clarity." She went inside and picked up her spellbook, some candles and her flower basket. "Collect as many herbs as possible." I nodded and started to pick the flowers and spices, taking in their earthly and familiar scents. Afterwards we headed away from the cottage we called home and proceeded to Ma's favorite cliff, it was farther from the town than our home and overlooked the sea. We sat down and Ma began the spell. The sky grew darker and more angry, the wind picked up and almost blowing out our candles. Ma sighed and smiled weakly at me, "Let's do a protection spell.." At that time Coilin came up, "Ma let me do a spell with ye and Gale.." Ma only smiled "Just follow Nightingale's lead." He nodded and sat next to me, together we sat at the altar preforming the protection spell. The wind became angry and blew a heavy gust our way knocking over our herbs and flipping the pages in the spellbook. My guess is one of the candles snuffed out or our salt circle was blown away, but something went wrong. I began to feel sick and dizzy, I guess Coilin was too, for he fainted. Almost an hour later he woke and sat up looking around he grew pale. "M-Ma we, should head home." She nodded and began picking up her things, as I began to help her I notice everything in a new light. I could see better, hear better and feel better. I picked up a lavender head and felt each individual bristle. I turned to Coilin and could tell he could feel the same. We returned home to find Da and Aengus fighting with Cathleen's father. Da stopped and looked at us, his eyes filled with fear, for Ma had on her pentagram shawl and clutched the spellbook tightly to her breast, whereas I had on my moon amulet. "WITCH!!" He began screaming as loud as he could. He pointed to us, "Ye be living among witches Aedan, that's punishable by death!" He began running to town screaming at the top of his lungs, "We must go!" Da yelled. We rushed inside, I grabbed my essential spell supplies and hooded cape. Coilin grabbed his hunting bow and quiver full of arrows. Ma and Da tried to get the horses ready, but it was too late for the man had returned and he brought the whole town with him. "She's be witch as is her daughter." He said in a tone that could terrify the great gods themselves. He threw his torch into the hay bale and it set aflame. One of the men in the group grabbed my arm and pulled me towards him, I could smell the whiskey on his breath. "Don't touch her!" Da yelled but to my horror one of the townsmen drove his pitchfork through his chest. Blood spurted out and splattered on my face. They did he same with Aengus, but Coilin they tied up with Ma. "Watch yer daughter suffer before yer burned witch!" He spat in her face and threw me to the ground. He took out his knife and cut up my dress leaving me exposed to the cold early spring air. Dropping his pants he leaned over me,holding me down despite my struggles. "Beg fer mercy.." I turned my head and spit in his eye, "Never you dog!" He grinned and shoved himself in me. I screamed in pain, and screamed for help, it felt like I was being ripped in half. I looked towards Ma and Coilin and saw tears running down their faces, for hours each of the towns men took their turn with me and with each turn the cut me. Soon the once green grass was stained red with the blood of my brothers and I. Again the men took me, they took my purity, my innocence, and all I could do was kick and scream and beg for it to end. Finally they grew tired of me, they took Ma and did the same to her, I couldn't move, I didn't want to. After the abuse they finally burned us down with the house. As I lay there screaming I turned to Coilin and hugged him, a voice came to me, "Don't fret my child, revenge is within ye, I save thee from death and give immortality.." At the time I guess I thought it was a method of dealing with death, I guess it wasn't...Related content
