Description
So here's the thing. When I drew this I wasn't a missionary anymore. But this is a drawing of an actual event that happened while I was in Japan. That area I'd worked in for 6 months, the Brazilian area. Well, the whole time I was there, another Elder was there too. He arrived 7 weeks before I did. So He had 6 transfers there and I had 5. We both were transferred out at the same time and since we were going in the same direction and the planning had gone such that'd we'd travel alone, we decided to travel together. Normally Elders and Sisters do not travel together, much less one Elder and one Sister. But exceptions can be made to the rules.Since we both were going to new areas, and phones stay in their respective areas, we didn't have phones and only knew the train schedule we had to take to get to our new areas. Unfortunately, we missed one train in the middle of the commute. No phones or internet. We had to figure it out on our own. So we boarded the next train and this happened. I was looking at my train schedule trying to find identical characters to make sure we were headed in the right direction. I don't know if he really was looking at me. But I did feel we were alot closer than we ever had been. That giant bag he has is his bike too. alot of things we had to carry when we transferred. We ended up being an hour late to our destination but we made it eventually. We split up in Kita-senju. He headed to Tsukuba in Ibaraki-ken and I was on my way to Yachiyo in Chiba-ken. It was a fun commute.

I only knew of one sister who had a folding bike, but we were strongly advised against buying one of those bikes or a mamachari (the girlish bikes) because of how inconvenient they can turn out to be for missionaries. We needed bikes that could move fast, weren't heavy, fit inside those bike bags, endure lots of wear and tear, and were comfortable to sit on for long amounts of time.
To pack the bike we removed the front tire (A much simpler task for a mountain bike and some road bikes) and attached it to the frame. then we put it in the bag and a strap is tied around the seat and the handle bar so we could carry it. Sisters were allowed to ship their bikes to their new areas but Elders had to carry their's there. That's why I don't have a bike bag too.
It's also really unusual to carry a bike on a train in japan. I know for here in Utah it's totally normal for a biker to catch a ride on a bus or the trains, but in japan it's unheard of. I don't know if I want to say unacceptable, but having it in a bag makes the endeavor a little more bearable. It's almost like they expect you to use your bike no matter how far you are traveling. That's what bikes are for.

No it's not. But alot of girls lately have been choosing to go. In the Mission I served in, there was about a 12 week period where we had at least a set of Elder AND a set of Sisters in each area. There were still more men than women, but we had lots of women that we could spread them around. I think it's a great opportunity for a girl to go on a mission. If she wishes to go, it'll be the best decision of her life!
