This is some steps of my portrait study.

1. Observe carefully proportions of the shape. try to start with biggest shapes and note.
2. quick add some value to see where main light is coming from.
3. block with color. /i did it with softlight layer/
4. try to stablish shapes.
5. paint paint
6. details and finish.

I hope it'll help somehow.
And don't forget to analyze the image before you stroke
