Nope, you cannot lie to someone who has intense foresight!

A note that has nothing to do with your lovely work: Was it firmly established that his name is Touga? I never saw it "officially" listed anywhere, hence why I just call him Taisho.

loophole here: Isn't Togas sword forged AFTER he meets Inuyashas mother? He made it out of his own fang to protect her? So Whats he doing with it here?

He's holding the sword Kagome brought with him to this time; so it's the one from the future.

Well, in the story this is drawn for, it's better explained. It's easily missed; I'd probably be thinking the same had I not read that.

ShadowsWeaver1 has it on ff.net, and I believe it's on the dokuga website as well, through the spark link. It's a great story.

Touga was the name used to refer to Inu no taishou for story boards and such during the making of the third Inuyasha movie.

They never actually name him in the movie, however, and in the sound track he is listed as 'Chichi' (father), so it's safe to say it is not his actual name. Touga translates to 'fighting fang'.

M-Skirvin In reply to smcandy [2009-11-06 04:05:39 +0000 UTC]

This is interesting information. Where did you hear that the name was used on the storyboard? I would like to read up on this.

And if it was used in the storyboard, it is probably the closest we will ever get to a real name for him.

I am rabidly interested in source material and references so feel free to refer me to any you may know.

Thanks!!!!

I got it fromm this site here [link] as all know IY and Sessho dad was never official names by it’s creator he just known as inu no taisho.

Addendum to the reply I just posted: I just went to the website you gave me the link for and I was disappointed that that site does not give any references as to just where they had gotten their information. Therefore, I will have to conclude that the name "Touga" is a name rumored to be in the storyboards of the third movie. I do have some documentation of my own that shows him listed only as "InuYasha's chichi" ("father").

I will continue to look for substantive information regarding the origins of the rumored name. Until then, I will assume that he just didn't choose to share his given name to others. His title should have been quite enough.....

smcandy In reply to M-Skirvin [2009-11-08 05:55:05 +0000 UTC]

He has no name other then inu no taishou which really is no ta name. It's fan based which why it was invented plus allot of people when they hear myoga talk about him in the movie mistaken that for his name.

Rumiko never gave a name other than the great dog demon or do general. I think his name was mean tot be mystery and if Rumiko wanted to name him and give imputer detailed she never got the change nor wanted to post it or talk about it. "InuYasha's chichi" ("father"). It’s what some readers and fans do and like to use in their fandom and fan fiction Touga thinking that name suits him. I have yet to find anyone naming him inu pappa or otherwise yet thus far.

That all jives with what I know. I don't know where "Touga" comes from, nor the description. I checked in my Japanese dictionaries, and the closest I can get is "togaru" which means to "taper to a point"

When it comes to fan fiction, it's all good. We can name him whatever we like as long as we don't claim it as his "real" name. It is a little harder to refer to him as Inu no Taisho all the time mainly because we want to put him in intimate situations where an actual name is more appropriate. The word Taisho is one that is used for a lot of things in Japanese usage, and it still translates as "master", "general" or "lord". One could call him Taisho and it would work and still be reasonably respectful of his rank and power.

If I had a wish to spend on such things, I'd use it to have an afternoon to pick Takahashi's brains about some of the nit-picky details she hasn't filled in. I can't help it, I just want to know everything about InuYasha!

I know all that. If you cruise my journal here on DA, you will see that I have TONS to say on such matters. I've done page by page analysis of InuYasha and have done my research on such things. One thing you have to remember about how the anime InuYasha was made: Takahashi did have a hand in how things were done, since that is how Kappei Yamaguchi got the job. She specifically asked for him to be the voice of InuYasha (especially after he did Ranma 1/2. One could argue that since the design for Inu no Taisho was never seen in the manga beyond his skeletal remains, that his appearance is not canon. There are those who would argue this, even though there is a production drawing that Takahashi did for the animators so that they would have a drawing of him to work from. His appearance is her design, and yet, it never appeared in the manga. Is it canon? Just what is "canon" anyway? Most analysts would tell you that anything that is sanctioned by the author would be canon, even if the author didn't write it. This is predicated upon the notion that the artist agreed, through a contract and payment thereof, that other people could render images and story elements within the established artist's universe.

If you want to cleave to the notion that Takahashi is the only one who can create canonical material, then you have a problem, since Takahashi herself provided loads of material that fills out her story to the animators since animation would require much more than what she needed to do a manga.

By way of example, Takahashi never established the layout of Kagome's house inside, but the animators needed that information in order to carry animated action and conversations from one room into another. Or how about the exact layout of the Sunset Shrine both future and past, or the route from the Bone Eater's Well to Kaede's minka? That stuff is simple not needed in that kind of detail in the manga, but in the anime, it is essential to know the enviroment so that the actions can be planned. Same goes for things like the naming of Ginta and Hakkaku, or A-Un, or Inu no Taisho. If the anime needed it, I have no doubt that the studio called her and asked her about the details, since her story was still being written, and she might already have scripted out where she will take her story. Then it's up to the animation studio as to whether or not they use the information. In Touga's case, they chose to not address him in such a familiar way. To do so might well have lessened his impact as a Youkai Lord of legendary power.

In the end, anything that appears in a fanfic is not canon by anyone's imagination, so I have decided that adhering to the ephemeral notion of "canon" is a matter of personal taste and desire for each individual fan. Each will have their preferences and almost certainly, no one will agree on how it should be. And that's okay with me.

Thanks for the comments and many thanks for the link! I will definitely read it!
