Description
Please note: This is not a username search feature and is not designed to be anything similar to one. You want to find a friend you don't know the username of, then ask them in person or Google it!~~~~~
One of the more common questions I see get asked either in my day to day hanging out in #devart , or my time volunteering in #help is how to find a person's page if you know their username. I feel that having to explain to someone new to the site that they have to manually enter the person's username and then to add deviantART.com is clunky and doesn't offer a smooth experience of the site.
This is also the case with long-time users of the site- we also have to either manually type the URL or flick through our friends list if we don't want to enter it.
I therefore propose this addition to the search page: an intelligent top box to the page that appears if the search query also happens to be a username. I went through a few designs for this, one of which ( [link] ) included a few of the user's recent deviations and more information, but I felt a more minimal approach worked best as it saves on screen space and doesn't push the search results too far down the page.
I also considered what should and should not appear- I guessed the most common shortcuts from what I personally use the most, but I also didn't want to make it too complicated. Having items like +Watch or Join Group would require extra code and functionality, when all those options are only one more click away if the user continues on to the Profile/Group Home Page. The buttons displayed change depending on what is appropriate.
Other possibilities that the dA Staff could implement are custom designs for special pages and accounts that have their own styling and subpages. An example I mocked up is for the deviantWEAR page- using it's distinctive green text on a dark background, as well as adding the appropriate Shop link as well as the latest special offer or news item. This could extend to other areas of the site such as the prints shop with it's current orange colour scheme, or having designs specific to a current major site Contest with links to the contest information and entries.
This could even extend even further but I feel it might drive our poor search feature to madness with all the extra queries! Possible issues that I could think of include the fact that common search parameters also correspond to actual usernames on the site. An (admittedly poor) example would be ~breakfast , which is (probably) a relatively well-used search term, but ~breakfast hasn't been active on the site for a few years. I can't imagine this happening too often as the vast majority of single-word searches would correspond to old or abandoned accounts, but having ~cat pop up with its blank icon every time it is searched for (I would guess frequently) would be incredibly annoying. A solution to this would be to check whether the user has been active within say, the past 3 months to decide whether to have the box appear.
Hope you like the idea and the design execution, if this has been suggested before please do not get all butthurt. I had a good search through the suggestions gallery and didn't find anything particularly similar. However if there is one already then I will quite happily pop a link right here: [ ... ... ]
Love to hear your views, whether it be on the concept or the design mockup? I think it's a great idea and would love to see it implemented.

Many thanks to everyone involved (see below) for the DD suggestion!

Oh of course, I'm not in charge of what gets options in the settings page but I'm sure people would welcome an option to turn it off/on as when and needed!
Went for that size bar as it can fit the 50px icons in neatly- I personally don't think it's too large, it's no bigger than some of the ads people see around here. Any smaller and that icon would have to be reduced in size which would likely just look awful. I also think it would have to be a uniform size, even though the custom designs such as the devWear mockup wouldn't necessarily have to be.

Ahhhhh! I never thought of the icon's size. That makes a lot of sense now! Thanks for explaining that. OTL
An on/off feature would probably be implemented by the staff for ease of complainants. :3
I hope this gets put into the coding soon, my friend!

If thought of before or not, I don't believe anyone has designed something like this before.
With your worries on everyday words like ~cat I don't see an issue there, you've stated that people are wanting to search for usernames and if they are wanting to search for that particular user with images as well, its the best of both worlds.
Perhaps searching for the word comes up with the general search results and with the link to the persons gallery in the top screen only, to keep them separate would suffice?
Overall It's very slick and would work well with the current layout, I am wondering what it would look like to see those results under the search bar with the other results? Would seem better placed there with the other results, as it is at the moment, it seems a little out of place.

Certainly workable as a userscript (except maybe the devwear stuff) but unfortunately the only people who'd install it are the people who don't need it :/

Perhaps have it ignore the check if the search is for "user cat" or something?

Should this be implemented, my only fear is that (like journals) deviants become art themselves!

Hence the reason why it's very distinct from the thumbnails! I'm not a fan of journals popping up in the search items...

FINALLY! The fact that we can not search for users has annoyed me ever since I first joined Deviantart. I really hope they implement this feature!

Well, as I stated, this isn't a user search- it's just gives a suggestion if the search query someone uses happens to be a username as well. The site doesn't need a username search.

This is a great idea! Though I get what you're saying about the potential search issues...maybe you could turn it off somehow?

Oh definitely- I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to have an on/off switch in your settings!

YES PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had times when I knew the person's name (or at least part of it) but hadn't faved any of their art or added them as a friend, but wanted to get to their page because of one reason or another, and couldn't find them. Wasted many hours on it, and either eventually found it, or just gave up. This would be very helpful!

I like the minimal one. Because, really, too much information gets annoying, and this one helps when one's searching for an artist (which I do /a lot/) but doesn't pop-up in an overly annoying fashion when lets say, I'm actually searching for pictures of britain.
Good job balancing it right.

Glad you think the same!
Initially I thought it might be nice to have a mid-sized dedicated top section for the user that pops up, but when I actually tried it out (Nothing too fancy, just getting the Photoshop window and moving it on top of Firefox!) I realised that it was way too big and pushes the rest of the page way too far down. Figured that this way it would be no bigger than a small-sized ad, except at least with this one there's a close button...
Cheers for the comment, really appreciate the feedback!
