Description
Common Chimpanzee; Pan troglodytes.
I want to point out that I am not anti-captivity, because I am well aware that, for some animals, it is the only place in the world the species can be found and kept safe. I also want to note that the animals at this park have always seemed healthy and happy to me, but Judy here will come right up to the bars to interact with the tourists. However, I think the photo could speak volumes for the animals around the world who aren't recieving the standards of care they deserve.

Equipment: Olympus E-420, 70-300mm Zuiko digital lens.
Location: Tenerife, Las islas Canarias.
Software: Photoshop CS3

so much emotion in this image. I think when we look at the chimps we see so much of our own characteristics and that's why an image like this will carry so much impact. well done

Very true, this is where I think behaviourists who stick to the textbook and say animals do not have any human emotions may be wrong. My old teacher said they didn't have concious thought-processes, hard to believe looking at Judy here.

I really do think she isn't too bad. Theirs a small troop and normally they are out and about socialising. She's definitely healthy from all appearances. I wonder if, at times, they're so like us they have bad days too.

This reminds me of those depressing WWF commercials on tv. The ones where they show all of the captive and abused wild life. T_T.
But on the other hand it is an amazing shot!

She does me too. I genuinely have no real concerns over the health of this group, they've been there for years in the same place, and I'm sure they are regulated properly, though I am checking. She did strike me like that this day though, which is why I took the shot.

This photo made me feel really sad. Although, as I've read in your description, this fella's perhaps quite happy in captivity, I still think of all those animals which are not treated well. Great shot! It's pretty thought-provoking.

I don't pretend to be an expert, though I have studied behaviour to an extent. Physically I can see nothing wrong with her, and I have watched some amazing interactions between her and the other three and normally they look 'happy'. Thought that with her in this mood I could use the shot for effect. Seems to have worked.
