The Magnificent Deceit

You were resplendent under the moonlight, shadows concealing the ugliness inside. Ignoring the dreadful pallor, I ran to you and intertwined myself in your halcyon arms. We swayed in blissful dances on the plains of ignorance. No evil words exchanged. No insects defaced this haven’s beauty.

You held out your hand (I couldn’t feel its coldness). Trapped in the cerulean expanse, I failed to see the decay accumulating at my feet. Black ash and dying embers of passion long spent. Hazy clouds defeated a sun reminiscent of former warmth. Wolves preyed on innocence; ravens consumed the rotting flesh of Affection.

Blind to all of this, there was only your face. Your snakelike smile wrapped itself around me; I lost myself in its charm. Showered by your lies and lavished in your deceit, I swallowed your words, stale as rusty razorblades. I drank the ambrosial essence of your voice, yet my lips tasted of bitter platitudes.

You lured me to the edge to kiss your fanged mouth and allowed my feet to trip upon the precipice. I gazed at you and implored, “Save me from the fall and I’ll bask in the warmth of your treachery.”

I could not read the expression that seized your face. Cracks spread across your cheeks like delicate spider webs while your eyes glazed over. Your hand left mine; I grasped the frigid air. I shivered as you broke away, crumbling before me.

The veil fell from my face and I saw for the first time. Suddenly aware of this desolate ruin, I silently wondered, “Was it my hand or yours that rent the sky and blotted out the sun?”
