[edit] The "Cut" shortcut on step 15 should be Ctrl+X.[/edit]This is something I've been meaning to do for the past almost 3 years. So here it is, a line art tutorial.
I should throw up the coloring/shading tutorial later this week.
If you want, you can watch the actual image being drawn in video form via YouTube: [link]

I gave this a try today. I can see that it takes some getting used to, but it's definitely a great method and the results are pretty decent, even after just a few tries. Kudos!

It's fine for stills. I tried it for animating. Takes way too long and the FLA grows too big for my netbook.

Ahhhhhh, crap. I was actually wondering how you managed to animate with that style earlier. Do you just use the brush tool to ink animations, then?

For the most part. Depends how many frames the image will show for. If for like 1 or 2 frames, I'll ink with pressure turned off. If the image will show for like more than a half second, I'll spend a bit more time on it.

Realistically you can use the paint brush tool and the smoothing feature to speed up your line work. I only use the line tool when I am doing something mechanical.

Oh, and I do have a question, sensei - what version of Flash do you use? Thanks!

Macromedia Flash MX most of the time. I like the way it smooths the paint brush better than the newer. Adobe Flash CS5 was used inn the tutorial since most people probably don't have Flash MX anymore.

Thanks, I'll have to get that program and start practicing. Sure hope it works okay with Vista; that evil OS has compatibility problems sometimes with PSE. Pixelation and resolution problems all over the place. Next time I need a computer I'm trying a Mac.

Boy do I owe you! I'm a "traditional" artist at heart - I use paint, brush, chalk and ink on paper, usually - and when I do create work with the computer, I use Photoshop Elements, which, while it's a great program for basic paint and coloring, can be a PAIN. Getting nice smooth lines in that program is murder, even with a Cintique and grip pen. Thanks to this tutorial, I'm getting Flash. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
And congrats on the DD, fellow Daily Deviationator! (insert Dr. Doofenshmirtz laugh here) You richly deserve it!

Thanks for this clear and easy to use Tutorial!
I just used it to draw a line art piece.
i am trying to find the tools that work for little nubby me, and found that this was much easier to use for line art then Illustrator or Photoshop.
so thanks again.

I think that's the best part about drawing in Flash. The tools are so much easier to use than Illustrator's!

Is this better than just using the pencil tool? I don't see how.

Whenever I use the pencil tool, my lines don't come out quite the way I want them to. This method may be more time consuming, but I feel it's more precise. Also, those without tablets can use this method with just their mouse.

If just using the pencil tool works better for you, then that's fine. It just doesn't work for everybody, so they made this for people who don't do as well with the pencil tool.

Oooh, so THAT'S how it's done! I always hated the normal drawing tool in Flash, and how it would random change shape, even when I turn the smoothing off. This is neat ^^

Hey, I just read your tutorial, and I was wondering why you choose to draw in flash. I get the reasoning behind wanting it to be vector, but why not use illustrator? Illustrator seems to me to be easier to use for this sort of thing, but maybe it's just because I am used to it. I know you can export swfs into flash and edit them in flash however you want if you need to animate them, so I am confused why anyone would choose to use flash to draw. Is it just for the challenge, or is there any benefit to doing this that I am missing?

I suppose it's all preference. Personally, I started out in Macromedia Flash 5. The only reason being was The brush tool and how it made my lines so silky smooth. I gave AI a chance back in (I think) the CS2 days and could never bring myself to like it. The brush tool was just way too different than what I was used to. This is coming from a guy who never uses the pen tool. Never liked it. I realize that AI got the Blob brush tool that will draw fills instead of lines, but I don't see the point of me buying and learning a newer AI for a tool I already have.
Flash just has all the core tools I need. To me, Flash is a vector program that feels like a pixel program. It's just simple enough for my needs. I'm just a construction worker who draws on the weekend, but I understand why pros use AI.
Don't underestimate Flash, though. In the right hands, it can crank out some really nice images. I'm sure you've ran across him, but check out `JohnSu 's gallery. He works exclusively in Flash too.
And thanks for commenting. It really made me think about why I use Flash.

Thanks for your response. This is something I have wondered for a long time whenever I see works like yours done in flash, so it's great to have a better idea of the reasoning behind it.
I am definetly a supporter of people using the tools that they are comfortable with in they way that they are comfortable doing, epecially when you're doing it for fun, even if I still think that line work like yours can be done with considerably more ease in illustrator.
I had never actually tried using the brush tool in flash though, until I checked it out after reading your response. It does have some interesting properties, and I can understand how it might lend it self well to the kind of work you do.
Also, I had never seen Johnsu's work before, so thanks for mentioning him. His work is amazing really makes me want to experiment with drawing in flash.
Thanks for your great tutorial by the way! It definetly will help me as I start my attempts at drawing in flash!

Flash RULES
I prefer brush cause it kinda looks cartoony. And one more thing I like to do is, convert the existing lineart to symbol then use Glow filter with black color, thickness to 200%. Retro cartoon style!
