Thank you for making this tutorial! I've been looking for a coloring tutorial like this for a long time, and I've finally found one, haha! I know this is made with traditional watercolor in mind, but your techniques are great for applying to digital painting as well, and I like that. ^^
Your willingness to thoroughly explain your process is really appreciated~

Thank you
I want to paint with watercolor, but I don't know what kind of paper need to be used, I've already seen much people telling but each one says something different. I bought a canson paper with weight of 300, I painted and then when I was going to scan, the texture was in the image...
And other thing, the ink I use in the drawing before I paint can't be the nankim? If needs other pen/ink is much expensive?
I don't know anyone who can help me, so I'm asking for you...

I have the paper strukture in my scan illustrations too. But it is important which scanner do you have. I have a good scanner and the paper texture look very good. I think you have good watercolor paper. I use canson too.
Which paper from canson do you use? Is it watercolor paper?
What means "nankim"?

lilialoley In reply to Naschi [2013-06-26 01:20:13 +0000 UTC]
I guess the correct is "nankeen" or "China Ink" or "Indian Ink". I'm not sure. Sorry, I don't speak english very well '-'.
About the paper, the package says it's for inks ( despite it don't mentions watercolor, only other inks, but I think this is not important), and it is 300gsm.

Fantastic! This is one of the best tutorials I've seen, and I think it can be extrapolated to work with crayons, too!
Thank you for taking the time to do this.

What a beautiful piece and great tutorial! Could you tell me what you used to do the white highlights?
π: 0 β©: 1
wishfullDreamer In reply to akrathan [2013-04-06 21:52:10 +0000 UTC]
She most likely used a white gel pen or white poster paint; those are the two most commonly used supplies for white highlights! A white gel pen I would recommend and what most artists use would be Sakura Gelly Roll White Gel Pen (they're really cheap, too). As for paint, I don't have any, but I have seen other really amazing artists use Copic White Poster Paint when you want to do big blobs of whiteness that would take hours to be done by gel pen. Hope this helps!

It helps brilliantly - I now have a three-pack of Sakura pens on the way from Amazon. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this! I am a watercolor/mixed media artist as well... I have always wondered how you organize your coloring and the ways to approach it. I really like the contrast in your pieces. I try to visually see and take notes from your artwork... to find ways I can improve my own (like using different colors for line art... different line weight, etc). This tutorial is very clear and helpful ^^ I will try the hard edge shadow thing. It really makes the artwork pop.
Now I noticed you use ink + nib pen. I don't use Canson paper.. I use Arches cold press. Their cold press texture is much more rough than Cansons. When I tried using a nib on it, my ink won't run well and it scratches the paper. This is where I rely on liner pens... which most I ruined because the texture of my paper kind of damages it. I've tried Canson Montval and it's not liking my masking fluid... (it tears the paper for some reason even after being completely dry) so I'm sticking with Arches.
Are you going to do a tutorial on how to line properly? and ways to get our ink to run smooth... which kind of nibs to use.. etc. ^^
Other than that, thanks for helping the community!
