This is great ! you should do one on the incorrect uses of the other tools. Like the pen tool or clone tool ect. but this was great !

Fantastic tutorial! I saw that sometimes I paint my drawings without contrast, mostly their skins, looks monocromatic and too smooth.
Well, I can say that it helped me a lot and I want to improve in digital painting/coloring ^_^

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Totally deserves a DD!

Conkeras In reply to ??? [2012-06-07 19:57:46 +0000 UTC]

Did you blend with the airbrush in the good blended example?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

natasha2808 In reply to Conkeras [2012-06-07 21:17:53 +0000 UTC]

yes I didn't use it in the monochromatic colors example on either of them but I used it in the overblending on both. The trick is not to avoid the airbrush tool but to use it only when you really have to. Try to do most of your blending the changing the opacity of the harder brushes.

I actually had a question; what tablet do you use? I really want to buy one, but I have no idea which one! And amazing tutorial, I'll keep it close

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

natasha2808 In reply to 0Aliah0 [2012-06-07 21:31:16 +0000 UTC]

My tablet is really old I got it in 8th grade and I'm 19 now. But it's the wacom intuos3 tablet 9X12. It's like $350. I would recommend getting a larger size tablet not necessarily just for the working area but also for the different degrees of pen pressure because that helps with shading. Also, the large tablet is definitely an investment that lasts a long time and they don't really go out of date that fast.

Even though I use Paint.net, this is very useful. I do paint by hand occasionally, so the lessons do carry over (it helps that I'm a big fan of depth and contrast).

Now if only I could find the equivalent of dodge and burn...

I'm guilty to lack of contrast, overblending and partially to monochromatic colors..

I'm too scared to just go with it and do stuff :/

You are welcome! That is a site I was on at the time I saw your upload, but that is not the "really helpful" one I was trying to share. I am uploading the file that I download on FileFactory because I could not find the place where I got it from. The file is only [114MB], but it is really worth downloading, if anyone wants a real boast in their painting work. I hope you do not mind me posting the file download in your comment area for everyone to get, if they want it?

I am currently uploading that [PDF] file download with FileFactory, if anyone is interested in the link.

These mistake could be found not only in digital, but also in traditional arts too. To be more specific, these mistakes originate from traditional art or more precisely, the lack of art experience, knowledge! Just saying.
Though, there are some nice detection in the tut, it can be useful for beginners/advanced drawers.

How to fix overblending?
PS
I work with a mouse so no fancy pen-pressure thing okay?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

natasha2808 In reply to Charanty [2012-06-07 21:40:08 +0000 UTC]

hmm I've never worked with the mouse for blending but I would say watch your opacity and use it like pen pressure. Use very small opacities (like 8%-17%) with the airbrush so you don't blur out your colors and keep layering.
