Very 'Disney-esque.' I like it her. One suggestion, when you create a layout sheet for your characters, maybe add a 3 to 6 point turnaround for your own reference.

That shall be my next step almost finished Ed, then going to try her out. Though only thing is I am not too happy with her clothes so trying to nail her design before committing to a turn-around sheet.

Your style's kinda reminding me of the art from "Saga", you should check it out it's great fun and has some awesome backdrops (very subjective, painterly).

You know, you are the second person to say that to me! First time, I thought they were just being nice, now I am thinking it might be true.

You're doing a pretty good job of getting expressive characters, the eyes and mouth are quite animated and easily readable like your other sheets. I would suggest lightening up the background, it's too dark and doesn't let her silhouette read clearly.

Her clothes look cool, I like the vertical slimming lines, but you should experiment around a bunch more, really try some crazy stuff and then reign in the design and put together the coolest parts. If you don't do it already, try to break down which elements you want in her design, like have 3 different things in a percentage that make up the whole 100%. Have the most important element, maybe her clothing style, making up 70% of her design with two more things to spice it up at 20 and 10%. That's how I do it and it makes sure you don't end up with something too boring.

Yea I don't know why it was so dark, the PSD file wasn't that bad, but I have lightened the bg up a ton so you can see her better!

I totally agree, need to work more on her clothes. I have actually been doodling some other things and also changing the colours a bit because still not sure on them. I want to try and keep those lines though I quite like them, but will try something else too!

Might put a combination of things up shortly, but working more on her facial expressions. Expressions are something I have really lacked in, I still find them hard but slowly improving!

Your clothing designs are always so good >.< I've just no idea when it comes to things like that, and what colours they should be! Fashion was never my strong point haha! Bad for a woman!

The lines work pretty well, it's a simple identifier. I really need to work on expressions too, I think I'll start making more specific character sheets for individual things instead of trying to cram everything in at one like you've been doing. That way expressions will get their time in the light.

I've been putting a bunch of time into thinking about clothing designs and color theory recently, I think I really need to remember my character design classes and start getting serious. Exaggeration is the key, pick an idea and go crazy with it and then slim it down for the final. It's always better to have too much than too little to work with so start big. I need to start following my own advice now...

I've heard a few people mention this character design class. I never got one of those at uni they just taught me to hold a pencil and animate. They did take me to the zoo a couple of times to draw the animals.

I love designing characters, but I think I've somehow missed out on these fundamental points!

The character design classes I took were all electives I think. I realized I didn't like 3D modeling about a year before graduation so I took all the drawing classes I could. Those classes were hidden behind confusing names too, like "Drawing for animation" and "background design and layout". I don't know why. I learned a lot in them and , yes, went to the zoo as well for one.

If your interested, all the work in these folder in my gallery catcouch.deviantart.com/galler… are from those classes. One was to reinterpret the Odyssey and the other to create a group of explorers.

I feel the same way, It seems like I missed out on some fundamental concepts since I was focused on 3D for so long. I guess I need to just teach myself everything I'm missing through tutorials and such.

Ahhh, that's a cool gallery! Yea, that is something I am trying to work on at the moment, like taking a model of a character and trying different costumes. But I think I need to loosen up a bit and research already existing clothes and apply that to my designs (which I have started, but I need practice conveying different materials as well).

I really hated working in 3D when I was at Uni, though my lecturer did try to encourage me to keep up with it. Apparently I was picking it up pretty fast, but I just felt so restrained by typing in numbers rather than just drawing the damn thing out!

I respect people who can work in 3D, I've seen some beautiful images made, but it's just not for me.

Well, we just gotta keep plugging on! I am sure we will get there eventually but feed back definitely helps!

Reference is extremely important, like knowing what kind of jacket and fashion style you want. It's really hard to guess everything, plus you need inspiration. I have the same problem with needing to loosen up. Material is something I just started on too. It's a lot of stuff to learn and take into account when creating characters. At least it's the kind of thing that can be taken at your own pace, unlike 3D where technical knowledge is king.

3D is just not my thing. I think it's best served being used for setting up backgrounds and props in my art. Like I think I'll model out a few important re-occurring props like weapons and such for my project. I have my 3D models from my portfolio on DA catcouch.deviantart.com/galler… but it was just not fun and extremely time consuming to make whole scenes. It wasn't rewarding and required more technical know how for lighting, unwrapping and texturing than it did for creating the actual art. I like the freedom of digital art a lot more.
