This is bear 399 and her 3 cubs. I feel really privileged to have gotten the chance to see and photograph these four bears. It's her 3rd spring with the cubs (as you can see they are nearly 3/4 her size) and they will likely stay with her only another few weeks.

Well! I really do learn about so much stuff from you! I never knew that bear cubs stayed with their mothers beyond one season, or even that such a thing as "bear spray" exists! Thanks for that

I notice her colour is slightly darker in your photo than in the news article...pardon Australian ignorance, but is that due to anything in particular, like time after hibernation, or is it just the photo parameters?

grizzly bears coats can vary a lot depending on the light that hits them, they have that silvery tipped fur. This shot was with kindof harsh light too so they look a little dark

I love this shot, entirely.

The only thing buggin' me, is the bear in front, I'm assuming 399 herself, her front-left leg is blocked out by a little shrub.

Nate-Zeman In reply to K00PA-TR00PA [2008-05-11 06:54:46 +0000 UTC]

yeah i looked through all of my shots, the shrubs were blocking at least one of the bears in ever photo. this one was the least noticeable

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

K00PA-TR00PA In reply to Nate-Zeman [2008-05-11 16:49:20 +0000 UTC]

It isn't really noticeable, unless you're nitpicking like me.

Awesome shot, i'd give anything to see real "animals" once again...lol. too bad you won't be able to see the wolf "limpy" he was killed not to long ago. it's funny how they give the animals "numbers" for names, but it makes sense to keep up with the animals there.

It also looks a bit hazy up by the mountain..I can't believe there's still snow up there! Thought it was warming up already....

anyway, i'll stop rambling, great shot!

Nate-Zeman In reply to xxmoonblissxx [2008-05-11 00:21:53 +0000 UTC]

thanks! I think the rule is to give animals numbers for names so that they don't form an emotional attachment to them. but I'm sure that doesn't prevent it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

xxmoonblissxx In reply to Nate-Zeman [2008-05-11 02:48:04 +0000 UTC]

I don't even have to give animals a name or a number and I'm attached immediately! I know lots of folks were attached to "limpy the wolf" and when he died it brought out a big controversy on the killing of the wolves that's already started up there. Have you heard anything of more wolves being killed in that area?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nate-Zeman In reply to xxmoonblissxx [2008-05-11 02:59:45 +0000 UTC]

yeah its terrible, its only been a little over a month since they were de-listed and already almost 40 wolves have been killed

jayshree [2008-05-11 00:04:57 +0000 UTC]

nate, thats amazing. the fact that she's been able to take care of those three babies, which i'm sure was very difficult, makes her even more beautiful than she already is. great timing. i suppose this is from when you jumped out of your car and saw your fav photographer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nate-Zeman In reply to jayshree [2008-05-11 06:48:36 +0000 UTC]

yeah its pretty rare for a mom to take them on for a 3rd spring, i think shes a tad over-protective
