Simply put, In terms of sheer volume, Giant Sequoias are the largest trees on the planet. These titans of the Western Sierras live to be thousands of years old, and grow to sizes that need to be seen to be believed. Mature Sequoias have bark that can grow to be as thick as three feet. The red armor allows these trees to survive forest fires, insect infestation and fungi. Surprisingly, Sequoias don't die from old age. They have an extensive, but extremely shallow root system, which means the majority of mature giant sequoias die simply from falling. Pictured here, four giant seqoias burn bright with the setting sun. These particular trees are part of the General Grant Grove, Just a stones throw away from the General Grant tree... the second largest tree in the world.

are you thinking of the coastal redwoods? cause these are giant sequoias.. which are a type of redwood but normally not what people are talking about when they say redwood

Thought it was all the same? Whenever I hear about, say, Redwood National Park, I hear about the Sequoias.

Trying to photograph a redwood is such a daunting proposition. That is when the artist gets this puzzled look saying, "How can I communicate the sheer size of this?", then with a side long glance at the magnificance they realize they can't. Nice job!!

I can imagine with them being so large, it's hard to gain perspective. I've wanted to see these things for a long time, hopefully this year. Can't wait to see some more from this trip.
