Description Conan, one of my favorite charcters of Robert E. Howard.
This drawing is another in a pencil art style change that I've been experimenting with. I would say that it's a hybrid between comic book use of black and traditional pencil use. So far I'm liking the results. I'm also trying to fill in the white space and stay aware of the negative and positive areas. Nothing mind blowing but new to me, enjoy!

Comments and critique always welcomed.

(EDIT) Made corrections to hand and sword.

Great drawing. Conan is one of my favorite characters ever. I don't know why, but I really like the knuckles. He looks like he could literally punch your face off, lol.

Great pic, couple of flaws. The sword. The blade is too short for a two hander, and his hands are scrunched on the hilt. They all so seem to be on an angle, making it look like the weapon is bent slightly.

Other than that, I LIKE IT!

Faved!

Amazing! This piece truly evokes the grim, powerful aspect of the tales of the legendary Robert E. Howard(May he rest in piece). You have done a great author an excellent service, and made a devoted Conan fan very happy. Superb work.

Thanks! Conan is one of my favorites, I think I've read just about everything Robert Howard wrote on him.
I don't have an Xbox, but if the game looks cool I might be tempted to buy one! That is, if it's okay with the wife.

Zsantz [2007-07-21 05:09:21 +0000 UTC]

It's an interesting tableau and composition.
I find only one flaw, the sword.
First off, the hilt looks bent in Conan's hands. They look like they are at an angle to one another instead of stacked. Also, the foreshortening of the blade makes the lines looked twisted in an Escher-esque fashion, so depending on how I look at it, the sword seems pointed toward me or away from me. An optical illusion that has always made me nauseous.

The rest is well done and well conceived, so I rather like it. The tension of Conan's muscles communicates the "I'm going to kill you, NOW" expression of his face. Really quite good for your first attempt at this hybridization of styles and techniques. Keep up the good work.

NathanRosario In reply to Zsantz [2007-07-21 12:36:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comments Corwin. I noticed that there was something wrong with the hands/sword area on Conan after I scanned it, my perception was that the problems is in the way the hands line up rather than the sword itself. I drew a line down the sword and believe it or not the blade and hilt line up. However the knuckles don't line up right, they instead seem to make a curving motion away from the bottom of the hilt. So I have an optical illusion going on. I'm going to try a couple of Photoshop tricks to see if I can improve the drawing in that area.
Thanks for pointing out the sword problem man, sometimes I'll notice a mistake and let it ride thinking it might just be me. I'm glad when someone else points problems, your critique was/is very much appreciated.
