Description So, my dad's birthday is the 3rd of July, and every year we make strawberry shortcake with fresh strawberries. This year, my aunt and I decided to pick them ourselves, and pick enough to make jam too. We picked about forty pounds. My back was aching for days, but they were good!

As you placed this into the No Mercy folder that means you want a brutally honest Critique from #thephotographyunion

Well Mariah, the shot's best feature, as it stands, is the lush color contrast of the green leaves and the beautiful berry bodies. The only problem of significance is the inclusion in the frame. All you really have is a mess of strawberries. I love the statement that accompanies the photo. Unfortunately the photo doesn't live up to the statement. What is lacking is the context of the environment around the berries. Graphically, the only element of relief is the bit of bowl showing at the top of the frame. Your artist comment is so rich and your photo is so, just berries. You need to expand your view of the subject. The balance to the verbal narrative is found in the photo by including the context in which the bowl of berries exists. The world around the bowl also describes the fact of the berries presence in the bowl. That sounds more complicated than it is. You need something more to make the image interesting. Color contrast is not enough. You need more visual elements to get it to work. More bowl..? More of the table on which it sits with tools and collection baskets...? Back up and look at the whole experience of collecting for a shortcake for you Dad!

I certainly understand your point, and I see what you mean. The comment is a little too big for the image, but the circumstances in which the image was taken are also important to know. When I took this picture, I was sitting in the front seat of a parked car with a big red bucket of strawberries propped between my legs. Givne the less than flattering surroundings, I decided to try to focus just on the berries rather than including the dashboard and windshield of the car, which I'm sure would have been very distracting. If this image had been taken in a better location,I probably would have done as you suggested and included more of the surroundings. As it is, I appreciate your feedback as it has enabled me to think more about framing and surroundings in my current photos. Thanks!

Well, you already had a comment of "nice, yumm" so I thought I'd give you more. Context is always important but when all is said and done, the photo must stand alone. I enjoyed looking at and writing about your image. Keep shooting and good luck!
