Description
Hi, Well today was a bit windy, and cold, but at least I have bright sun!I went to the lower part of my friend Seth's field to check on the nesting hole a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches used last year. When I got there they were already cleaning the hole out..so I set up and shot a bunch of pics. They would clean out the old stuff and then bring in new bedding material. It was funny to watch them as sometimes they would bring a bit of bark back and it wouldn't fit in the hole.. yup they would try many times before dropping it and going off for something else.
In this pic, she has just come out of the nest hole.
I'm posting 5 pics of these and the nesting building behavior they displayed. Enjoy the pics..It's like your there watching with me!

The moment I saw this I knew emediately that this was a nuthatch. I did not need to see the title to know a nuthatch when I see one. Birds. Birds are weird and interesting in so many different kinds of ways. They're fascinating.

Hi, I put the name in the title for some of my shots, because it makes it easier for me when I file them in my wildlife picture files for later sales and reference. Also some people don't know what they are....

Yeah I clearly get that and having no names for files... that would drive me insane to have no named files! Even if you did know the species or whatever it is still nice and good to have a title.

nice, you might try using a reflector or flash to add a catch light in the eye, makes em look more alive . . . but hey it's a Nuthatch . . hard to get em to hold still, another thing that has worked for me is to make a prop limb with a hidden hole full of meal worms . . . they will eat and you get a pic

Hi Tim, Thanks for the info.. I'll try that on the nest hole in the pine grove, because even during the day it's wicked dark. Maybe that downy woodpecker won't mind the flash of light.

I am surprised your having problems with the flash bothering the birds, I have seldom experienced that issue, you might also try a flash extender like this "Better Beamer" Flash Extender" get it from B&H or Amazon . . . it works pretty good for adding a spot of light when using a tele . .

Well Tim, this nest is in a thick pine grove and it's always like late late / early evening in it..even at 10am. I have tried my flash and as soon as I use it the little bugger takes off and doesn't return for about an hour. I have basically written this nest of for pic ops.
I'm going to look into that Better beamer...
