Ok, so this isn't that much of a tutorial, more just a walk-through of my method. Considering I'm not very experienced, I'm sure my method will change significantly over time. In any case, I hope this can help a few people out there, by showing them something new.

I'd like to thank open source software programmers. y'all rock. Programs used were MyPaint [link] , the GIMP [link] , and Inkscape [link] , all running on Linux, of course (but all those programs are available for windows, and mac)
