With every new image I get more comfortable using Painter… before I was having a lot of trouble blending and detailing in the program, but something’s clicked. This was done using a combination of Painter and Photoshop, but I think I used Painter a tiny bit more than PS. I’m simply addicted to those artist oils.

All textures are done by hand. I made an effort to make the scales look a part of her skin, not flat or pasted on like I see in so many mermaid images (though, she isn’t a mermaid—she’s more reptilian than fish.) And speaking of fish, they were nearly the death of me. I lost count because I moved them around so much, but I think there are over 50.

I love your paintings! The mermaids in particular look more realistic (and cooler) than alot of art I've seen.

Very beautiful! The fishes are great and also the softness of the whole picture. That makes it look like from an old myths book or something. Absolutely awesome.

How do you see this mermaid? what are her charecteristics to you as the artist? Or do you feel different towards the idea of her depending on your mood? I really like this piece. i don't like light fantasy mermaids they bore me (usually). It seems have a deep rooted obsession with dark mermaids such as these. i can't explain it. i can only explain it in my head with no words. its the easiest and most true way. so i'm glad you made this, as i spend ages trying to look for dark creatures such as these.
i think you did a great job with the scale thing (making it look more like her skin).

I don't see her as light or dark. She's a complicated character. But I think people often think that complicated = dark, because light fantasy is based on a child-like understanding of the world.

A print of this is hanging in the lounge of one of the new dorms at my school! The first time I walked into the building I saw it through some glass doors and immediately had to go in and see it. I fell in love with it. This is such a hauntingly beautiful piece. I'm so happy to have stumbled upon your page and see some of the rest of your work.

Yeah, that was part of my thesis project in the spring. I made three big canvas prints for my senior show and The College decided to purchase that one. Cool to hear it's up; I haven't been back to visit campus yet this year.

I love the under water plants .. they look so lifelike and really set a dark, mysterious mood. Very nice how you've let her tail shine through a little as to give you a thought of how big she is but keep it hidden too, as though there could be miles more of that tail somewhere I cannot see. Kinda creepy but also beautiful. I really really like this piece ! Thank you for sharing (also thanks for the detail shots, nice work on her face!).
