Description Some of my old Schoolism-inspired notes and studies on different lighting techniques featuring one of my characters, Dinar, in his absolutely non-serious, non-canon, chibi-esque bull form. Don't ask. He was just easier (and more fun) to paint.

The classic three-point lighting technique is one of the most commonly used setups in visual media. You can see it being used a lot in character concept art where background is often non-existent, making the rim light an easy and convenient way to make the character 'pop' and offer some of the much needed depth and dimension. Each light has the capability to drastically alter the mood of the scene through color temperature, intensity or direction. This is just a basic setup, and the possibilities are limitless. It all really depends on what you're trying to achieve and convey within your scene.

upd2: Added a proper example and a few more notes!

Hope this is helpful to somebody. If you're struggling with lighting your characters, this is a great starting point.

Thank you! Actually a good resource. I was making the draw of a criature and I couldn't understand how to represent the lighting well enough. Now I can!

Thank you too - I'm sure it will help me a bit. Bye the way, there is also a good book from John Alton - about 3-point light.

I thought I'd share with you Nayro :')
When people ask me about shading I generally go "No, nonono, don't look at me, look at this"

Haha well thank you!! This is not exactly a shading tutorial, though, it's the direct opposite (for the most part).
You should probably point them to the basic fundamentals of light and shadow instead if they want to learn how to shade! www.huevaluechroma.com/021.php www.proko.com/shading-light-an…

Just a lot of painting >.< Gotta blendΒ the colors together well so there are smooth transitions everywhere. Thank you!

Fill is like Ambient Occlusion?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nayro In reply to bigdad [2016-12-08 11:35:07 +0000 UTC]

No! Fill light is a type of soft, diffused light source, while AO is a term for the shadingΒ technique used in CG. It's essentially a simulation of deep shadowsΒ that occur in nooks and crevices where the fill (or ambient) light cannot reach.

You can read more about AO here, for example:Β www.independentdeveloper.com/a…

Ah thank you. Still though, The Fill has a similar role here I can see XD
