Description I drew all of these in social studies class at the beginning of the school year.

Well, that was ALSO the first version of Ed's Portal of Truth, and then I actually went into detail and all that.

You wouldn't believe how long it took me to draw all those dang circles. But I'll give you a clue: I got an A- in social studies class.

What does the octagonal transmutation circle do, and who does it belong to?

*scrutinizes my own doodles from over half a decade ago to figure out which one you mean* I'm very sorry to say I have no idea which transmutation circle you are referring to, because as far as I can tell none of them have eight sides? Are there any other details about it that you can distinguish it by?

The one directly below mustangs in this photo here. Is that your imagination or one from the show?

Oh, yes, that one. I'm not sure if this is actually how the transmutation circle was oriented, but I modeled it off of the scene in Laboratory No. 5 when the Ishvalans were sacrificed to create a philosopher's stone. More so before it was activated; once it was, it probably looked more like the transmutation circle that formed around Xerxes. Does that help?

Yes, quite. I'm considering an oc, for personal use, and no connection to the internet. I make canes, and I need a brand, and so I was wondering if I could keep that one.

Well, I mean, since it's based on Arakawa's design then I probably can't claim it entirely as my own anyway, but hey if you wanted to give me money to use it I wouldn't complain. Thanks for asking first though!

If you really research it, Alchemy is one REALLY overpowered way of doing shit. The immense amount of stuff you can do and mass produce is rediculous. The values of Energy-to-Mass Conversion are the true face of alchemy and the T-circles are just a fraction of what one can do.

I know!

Alchemy is so epic.

I had to go about researching a bunch of stuff for a fanfic once, so I know more than I probably should...

BASIC STUFF: Comprehension, deconstruction, reconstruction. That's what alchemy is. But the runes help guide the second two steps.

There is also a big part of alchemy that most people who learned about it through FMA is the EMC, or Energy to Mass Conversion, values and equivalent exchange systems.
You see, The law of equivalent exchange has two parts to it, one mainly shown and used in FMA and the other shown a few times, mainly involving the PoT (Portal of Truth).
What I'm guessing is, that your interpritation of Alchemy is the, clap your hands together, and take only what's at present and what you're transmuting and transmute with it. That's part one.
Part two is that everything has a value to it that is known as EMC. The values in their exact forms, are just estimated upon elemental values. For example, if you wanted a kilogram of iron, you would have to transmute a cubic ton of dirt into raw EMC. Then, with a little bit of iron, or some of the molecules in iron to take that raw EMC and multiply the iron into however much EMC you sacrificed. EMC can also be created and stored in a Philosopher's Stone.

Yeah, I know. You can only give what you already have. You can't make something out of thin air; you have to have the materials to do it.

The circle in a transmutation represents the flow of energy through which something can be converted. Therefore you have to have the circle for the flow of energy to pass through, hence the transmutation circles, unless, of course, you've seen the Truth then you can merely put you hands together as the symbol for a circle.
As for the runes (little drawings or whatever in each circle) those are to specify which element(s) you want to transmute into what. Runes for water or liquids are usually more curvy, while runes for rock or land are more blocky and cubical. But when you've seen the Truth then you already have the information/guide inside of you for the runes, so you can just clap your hands to make the circle, and use your own knowledge to transmute something.

But thanks for the lesson?

It's just that the forgotton part of Alchemy, the EMC values and conversions, are much more complex and rewarding than just normal transmutations. The P-stone is just thought of as an EMC/soul battery when it's much more. Think of all the research that could be done with it! You could use death-row inmates for Philosopher's Stones; they're gonna die anyway, so lets make them a use to society. (that's mostly how my OC and his brother do alchemy)

Uh, yeah they figured it out in episode 7 or 8 of Brotherhood I believe...?

Sorry if I'm sounding rude, I just don't see what you're trying to get at.

Eh, Just look at this: [link]

It's an alchemy mod for a game called minecraft, it harnesses the more OP side of alchemy.
The point i was trying to make was that the EMC was never really mentioned in FMA. EMC also stands for Energy [something] Currency, I just didn't see the use of the terms is all.
