A guide on how to make a plush friendly My Little Pony OC.
I wanted to make this guide to give people an idea on what elements of an MLP oc can be difficult or impossible to plush. When designing an OC, or wanting to get one made as a plush, there are things to avoid or minimise.
This guide is based on personal experience and not all information may be true for every plush maker.

This is a wonderful list! Thank you for including feathered hooves, I never thought it could be so hard, I nearly died trying to make Shining Armor's hooves pretty! (it took over four goes)
As to minky colours, I have in the past dyed fabrics to get a better shade. I've done it with Applejack but again, I have to buy the (specialised that will take to synthetic fabrics) dye, cook it and spend a few hours testing and drying the fabric, so it costs more.
It's how I do all the skin tones for human plush because peaches and nice browns are not a common colour amongst fleece and minky. At least not in the UK.
Also if the plush artist is not in America, it may be hard for them to acquire certain brands of minky without paying phenomenal shipping prices from USA/China. Shannon's the easiest to get ahold of, so when looking at colours, start with Shannon and go from there. And ask the plush artist their opinion, as computer images can differ from the real thing. We generally keep a swatch book (I have the Shannon one pictured) and can tell you exactly how the light falls across what shade, so we can help you choose!
I've had some requests for very.... 'unique' ponies before and it's hard because I don't want to flat out say "this design does not translate well in a plush" but at the same time I have to coherently justify WHY their devil-horned scar-covered leopard-print-maned (no really) princess pony costs more than Twilight Sparkle. Plus I like a lot of OC designs. It's fun to do something different, but only if the design is doable
Sorry, I'll quit rambling now XD

Ohh awesome to hear about dying. I've never dyed but I do airbrush to give certain unique colours and effects.
I'm in Australia and have to suffer through paying full shipping costs. My minky orders typically run $150-200 shipping. I refuse to be limited in colour choice XD. I wish there was an Australian supplier of Shannon XDDD.

SylenisCrafts In reply to NazFX [2014-03-23 23:02:27 +0000 UTC]
Oh my gosh what horrible shipping! I wouldn't want to add that to my pricing ): Over Christmas the shipping between USA and UK increased a LOT and I ended up unable to justify ordering my skintone craft velour. It's how I got into dying because I found out it's so much cheaper to buy cream fabric from the UK and dye it.
Is there no Shannon supplier in Australia? I thought I read there was, I must be mistaken it was a while since I looked up their suppliers...
We didn't used to have any in the UK, but all of a sudden one day Plush Addicts appeared on my google, and Rooftop fabrics too. I don't know if they were hiding but I went from getting no results for minky on google, to Rooftops, and then Plush Addict! They made my sewing SO much easier! It'd be cool if you could start up a supply shop yourself, but wholesale purchasing is hefty at the time, even if it's cheaper in the long run D:

There is one that claims to be but they never seem to have minky in stock. I really need to find someone to get it in, or as you said consider buying it in bulk from Shannon down the line .

Ugh that's annoying. Perhaps if a group of plush artists based in Australia all e-mailed to inquire as to their Shannon stock, they could be persuaded to order a few basic colours in and go from there? Plush Addict were very good when I e-mailed about certain products they didn't used to stock (snow white rose cuddle- they only used to have camel) But yes, I've considered ordering a roll of white and maybe a pale pink as it's the colours I use most and could dye if I really needed to!

Dear god, $150-$200 just for shipping? How many yards of fabric is that for?

NazFX In reply to WhiteHeather [2014-03-21 06:21:17 +0000 UTC]
Yep it's insane. That's about 10-15 yards though. i always do big orders to try and save

WhiteHeather In reply to NazFX [2014-03-21 06:51:56 +0000 UTC]
With shipping costs like that, you'd have to! Still, I think 10 yards of fabric would be like $20-$30 tops in shipping for me. I really wish you had a local place you could buy from! That international shipping is killer. Is there some place that sells minky, just not Shannon brand? Shannon is the nicest, but a lot of the other stuff is very close.

NazFX In reply to WhiteHeather [2014-03-21 06:54:03 +0000 UTC]
There are a couple of places that stock 'minky'. If you can call it that. They have 10 colours in stock max and the quality is just.. beyond poor. I just wish there was something semi decent :/ .

WhiteHeather In reply to NazFX [2014-03-21 07:00:43 +0000 UTC]
I assume you've checked out this place ? They seem to have a decent color range, though obviously not anywhere near as good as plush addict. It's the only think I found with a quick search. Have you tried contacting Shannon directly and asking if they have any retailers in Australia? They don't have a dealer listed on their International Distributors section, but that doesn't mean there isn't one! It can't hurt to try.

NazFX In reply to WhiteHeather [2014-03-24 12:35:20 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I've ordered swatches from them early on. It's not horrid but still nowhere near as nice as Shannon. I hate to be picky but I can feel a blatent difference and I really prefer the fluffier, fuller bodied stuff. I punish myself XD.
I have looked up Australian suppliers for Shannon and only found one very exclusive boutique fabric store that says it is a supplier. But they had no minky available. I really need to chase them on it, but I can't remember if I did in the past hehe XD.

Yeah, Shannon is, in general, the best. However, sometimes I'm willing to go the slightly less nice route for a perfect color. As long as it doesn't look or feel bad!

Yup I recently got the swatch set from that ebay seller. Lots of interesting colours (like a darker purple for twi and a good brown/grey for one of my OCs). It isn't quite shannon quality but it's still very nice

WhiteHeather In reply to NazFX [2014-03-24 21:21:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah! I still need to order some fabrics from them. Like you said, not as good as shannon, but some really nice color options.

AH! This is so awesome! ;u;
I still want to thank you for making all of my plushes! They're all so beautiful and I can only imagine how hard all of them where to do. (I even TRIED to make November's mane and tail simple, but apparently I fooled myself. VCBHXJNCGV! I'M SORRY! x'D)
This is an amazing reference though for future plush making and one that everyone should look at! >w<

I love how you can get the point across and still be funny.
Im still getting used to my oc's plush design... :s
But your plush skills are worth the extra $$$
Id do the airbrushing myself if i could, but ive lost an important piece to my airbrush...

For an overly spiky oc, use long pile faux fur as it creates the spiky/fluffy look with minimal effort. And for markings, id just airbrush using a stencil.-just some ideas
Personally my pet peeves is having to do small plushies X-X
its a killer on the hands. As well as when the oc has things like a prosthetic leg... How do you deal with things like that?
Heres a funny for you: today i sewed the pony's tail on its back leg instead of its butt... And i have no quick unpick... So hes got a tail sprouting from his leg.. It looks hilarious...

NazFX In reply to CinnamonToast-OwO [2014-03-21 22:40:37 +0000 UTC]
Ahh yes that's always a good way to go, but I don't use fur on my ponies ^_^. Airbrushing is great for markings too, unless the markings are a light colour on a dark base ^_^.
Never made a prosthetic leg, but I suppose you would plush the leg separately and then wire/ladder stitch it onto a stub of the real pony leg?
I HATE unpicking too!!

I hear ya on the light color with dark base... I learnt that the hard way when i bought 7m of black fur only to realize that i couldnt efficiantly airbrush it purple... I was trying to make hair for this oc: www.deviantart.com/art/Banish-…
At least im able to trade it for artwork and plushies... (@$50 per meter for that fur, sooo yeah...)

Hmm, this is very interesting it tells you how to make an O.C right for a good plushie.
No overdesign, no weird overdone spikes or curls, not too much sparkle, no strange gradients, and try not to overdue colors. This is very helpful, because I might take up plushing.
I'm sure my O.C isn't too hard to plush, she's extremely simple and cute.
I'm gonna need to get my supplies first though. LOL
Keep.. Well Plushing! (I usually say Doodling),
