Description So here's part 2 of my tutorial, the goal is to teach newbies the "meat" you could say of what makes your kaiju, well a Kaiju!

I had a personal deadline of Oct. 31, so I am pretty dissapointed it wasn't finished by the time of submission. Deadlines are pretty important to me, but life got in the way so I didn't have as much time like I wanted. That's OK though, as since I have time now to finish up on my requests.

Ah-ha! I see! I think I should start watching people's scraps more often, they have some interesting stuff!

All too true!

Just wondering, but do you think 75 meters (246 feet)Β and 120 meters (393 feet)Β are good sizes for Godzilla and King Ghidorah, respectively?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NazRigar In reply to gerdzerl [2013-11-06 06:07:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, Heisei era Godzilla was above 300ft, and 2000 era was smaller, then yeah! It's pretty good size, I mean c'mon it's Godzilla, he has to be bigger than average. King Ghidorah being even bigger is even better, considering his role as a villain with a menagerie of powers of his own.

Personally I liked this one more because it's more informative (for me). Like yeah, I know the archetypes (haha no offense, I did enjoy the last one), but, say, body shapes? Never thought about it that way! I've always been bad with the more 'analytical' side of things (for lack of a better word), so I always find that kinda stuff more helpful.

Β Very nice details on the body types and other such subjects. I also like your take on Monsturra, and you are right, he works as a hybrid of the wrestler/traditional kaiju body types.

Thank you! I was hoping I did Monsturra right, he's one of the more difficult kaiju to draw and convert to my style. Exactly! And that means he can pretty much handle quite a lot in a fight!

JacobSpencerKaiju79 In reply to NazRigar [2013-11-04 09:43:18 +0000 UTC]

I don't haveΒ much to really gripe about it, it looks good, though his brow isn't brown, it's blue like the rest of his body. But, i can overlook it, so don't worry. Considering his design tend to flux anyway, it isn't a big deal.

Β

But, I figured the bigger hands would work better as he fights giant monsters, so it makes sense that he is built like a tank.Β  And trust me, there will be alot of physical battles in my kaijuverse.

Heeeeeey Vas, Razzek! What you two doing here?

As time has gone on, Vastrato has pretty much lost her sound abilities. Something I could probably revive if I wanted, but then my Boomer would look mundane. Razzek's fire, at least in KAS(where he has it) is deathly and.. weird. But bleh.
I still love having my ego stroked here ~w~ These two look beastly in your style. Vas's face man.

Again, a great Tutorial. WE MUST HAVE MOAR!

Helping Newbies of course

I say keep the sound powers, sound powers for protagonists tend to not be used often despite its versatility (it can disable, misdirect and kill in several ways). Razzek is awesome, and is an eel-creature, which makes him more awesome.
Of course! I take immense pride in drawing other folk's kaiju as faithful as possible while converting them to my style! So thank you

Then MOAR you shall have (after I'm done with a buttload of requests of course...).

HUZZAH! Which makes more sense considering that Gators make an awesome rumbling noise to show every other creature in the same who's boss.

Save Vastrato isn't a Gator as much a Crocodile. Which Crocodiles in turn actually roar.

Which makes crocodilians all the more awesome as reptiles (they're also more closely related to dinosaurs than all other reptiles).

AkityMH In reply to NazRigar [2013-11-05 07:20:45 +0000 UTC]

Reptile wise, yeah. I believe Crocodiles are decended from Archosaurs, which also split into Dinosaurs, marine reptiles, and Pterodons.. I could be wrong about Pterodons.
Then there are the branching crocodile-like family called Raiunsuchids(spelling?)

NazRigar In reply to AkityMH [2013-11-05 07:28:01 +0000 UTC]

Nope, Archosaurs are seperate from pterosaurs, who are part of their own clade, Pterasauromorpha.

Rauisuchians (I have problems spelling them out myself...)

Actually, Pterosaurs are part of Archosauria. They're more closely related to dinosaurs and birds than crocodiles, but they are part of that overall group!

I know right? I use to that, but it turns out that Dinos and Pterosaurs are related as a member of the group called "Saurospida", meaning lizard face. Actually they should be called hard egg shell layers.

I feel like you missed a bunch of body types, filed under the weird and insane portion.Β  Like, what about a hexapod or other critter with too many legs?Β  Or a monster that has two arms, but no lower body?Β  And what about flyers?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NazRigar In reply to TheHiddenElephant [2013-11-04 07:55:12 +0000 UTC]

That's right! When I was making I knew that there was just too many body types to fit into just one measely tutorial, so! I intend to create a special section on body types after I'm done with the main line of tutorials. I even plan to do a special one for insect kaiju, because they're the EPITOME of strange and insane body types! Flyers too I guess. I'm guessing the title would be called "Diverse Body Types".

DinoHunter2 In reply to ??? [2013-11-03 19:40:15 +0000 UTC]

Sorry to hear you missed your deadline, but life comes first. Hopefully things go smoother for you next time.

I think you're giving some very solid advice with the geometric body types and basic builds, but one thing that might be worth mentioning (maybe in another section or as a note here) is that what shapes constitute big-and-monstrous aren't always the same depending on the setting. The left-blue kaiju you present would indeed be more believable in most scenarios, but for something animated or very stylized the right-red kaiju could work too- like, say, as one of the Angels in Evangelion. And of course all this changes when you get into monsters that burrow, fly, or live underwater- differences in gravity & air/water/earth resistance will change how a monster's weight must be distributed. Then there are insects, who have a whole different set of rules from vertebrate creatures. Obviously that's a lot of content for just a basic tutorial, not saying you should try cramming it all in there, but maybe some disclaimers are in order just in case.

That said, I think overall this is great! Love the scale image with Jovis, Tyrantis, and Theraga. That kind of visual aid is always great for putting things into perspective- monster size shouldn't be some childish pissing contest, it has a major impact on how your creatures are perceived and how they'll interact with their world. Even though most if not all kaiju are physically impossible to begin with you should still try to present some level of believability, and scaling speed and size properly is a big part of that. Theraga can get away with swift movements because he's pretty "small" by kaiju standards, but 400 foot Jovis would look weightless and cartoony moving at the same speed. I get the impression that's something a lot of younger monster-makers don't realize: they go humongous because they think its inherently better and don't put any thought into how that'd effect the way their monsters move. I'm glad you decided to point out how it affects character and environment interactions, too. Godzilla 2000 was a good example of that; the big G had been growing and growing for years but Toho decided to reverse the trend and shrink him for that movie so he could interact with the city differently and spot the human characters.

Power-level consistency is another fantastic point to bring up and I love your gravity vs dark matter example. I only wish you'd had more room to expand upon it, like showing how well balanced enemies can be opposites in terms of speed/power/defense, element, morality, evolutionary background, theme, or even have more commonalities than differences and be deadlocked because they're different shades of the same thing. It can be a pretty complex subject and sometimes "so and so is a challenging opponent" just doesn't cut it if you really want things running smoothly. Of course I'm sure you know that, you definitely hit on the main, most important points here so I'm not complaining! Love the designs of your example kaiju and Razzek, too.

Looking forward to your guide on setting!

Yeah, life always come first, but I'm also pretty thankful for the past few days that happened really! Helped me unwind and relax, also it was great to be with family. And now for a long thought out reply to one of the best analytic comments I'll ever find on DA!

I wholeheartedly agree about what you said. One of my greatest concerns in that section was thinking exactly what should be included, since many a person has different ideas and rules for his/her world. I also almost completely forgot about Neon Genesis Evangelion, I should have took note on how they managed to make it work! To be honest I did want to cram all that into one tutorial, but I also had to take note of space and file size (my internet connection ain't the fastest in the world in terms of uploading). I especially wanted to try and talk about the several varieties of kaiju just like TT did in his (balloon vs mountain was an excellent comparison that applied to several hundred kaijus). All in all yeah, there is a lot to be filled in. I'll definitely add a disclaimer, when touching up the pic itself.

I'm glad that the diagram did it's purpose as I was especially concerned with the scale stuff right here. I wanted to show viewers what exactly were they dealing with making a kaiju, as well as the pros and cons for when making them a certain size. I believed I could even expand more on that part, considering how essential it is, but I tried to scrunch it down to it's bare basics of why it is so, so very important.

I actually did want to explore a plethora more about the importance of power level consistency including the concepts of polar opposites in power or two kaiju with similar powers, but with different mindsets in regards to battle. It's highly complex, so trying to scrunch it down to bare basics was kinda painful for me. I love character work involving these things, and hopefully, when I'm done with main series of tutorials, I can go back to these parts because there's just so, so much more to expand upon!

Thanks! Setting's actually gonna be my favorite I think, because I love reading through works that involve a huge amount of world building (that's one of the greatest reasons why I think your kaijuverse is one of the best! It's both organized and extremley interesting).
