Description
uring Monday, April 29th, there was this Artist Meetup in Jakarta, and the topic was absolutely freeform. We chatted and had fun, and I got to meet new peopleDuring this time, I was inspired by my previous work with the dwarf elephant and Romans (plus 's and 's comments), and continue it. It soon became a Character Design exercise, combining my love of history and making characters.
The mood is very much like a Young Adult novel, and takes inspiration from lesser known aspects of the Roman World (and a lot of artistic liberties).
Basically, set in a quirkier Roman Empire where some of the quirky megafauna of the late pleistocene still exist (if rare), and the Senate still have some impact on decision making.
It focuses on a Legionary named Modicus and the rest of the legion, whose sole job is to basically "deal with" oddities within the Empire, meeting interesting critters along the way, all the while haggard by the forces of a mighty warlord, simply known, as The Thracian.
Full name Gaius Lucius Varro Modicus (age 17), Modicus earned that name for being so plain and so lacking in any unique qualities on the surface, he got the nickname for "Average". However, behind his plain look, he's kind, sensible and is very empathetic. He treats everyone else in the Cohort equally, and doesn't look down on the Auxiliaries. He also loves quirky animals; seeing a Dwarf Elephant in Crete was one of the best moments in his life. And despite his average-ness, there is hint of a more, er-hem, rebellious side; After all, he did elope with a Briton girl without his father knowing it, and brought her along as he travels with the rest of the legion.
The love of his life, Ceallach, otherwise known as Gaia Lucia, is the daughter of a rich, briton cavalryman who himself served as an Auxiliary. Despite being partially Romanized, her dad her taught her to never forget where she came from, and thus still has that good ol' Celtic spirit in her veins. Unlike other women who follow the Roman camps, who stayed mostly within camp grounds, she's a really, really good scout and forager. The Cohort would probably starve to death if it ain't for her (I was inspired when I read an article about how, despite the ban on marriage in the roman army, that wives and girlfriends did indeed sometimes got brought along with the men and the law got blatantly ignored at times)
Gaius Lucius Magnus is his often-disappointed father, widower and a Centurion. He didn't want his son to join the army, as Modicus is his only son after his wife died from childbirth. Due to to a case of awful luck (or by a few strings pulled by his brother-in-law), Modicus is part of his father's Century. Having to maintain equality and dispel notions of nepotism, AND forcing himself to tolerate his son bringing along his gal-pal causes severe stress on his psyche, as he's a famed Centurion who always stuck by the rules and was great at his job. He earned his name Magnus, for always maintaining the morale of his men and being really strong for his size.
Quintus Varro is Modicus' Patrician uncle from his mother's side, and practically raised him as his own when his father was on campaign. As such, he helped shape Modicus' appreciation for the softer things in life. Has a large say in the senate, and keeps the legion paid and funded. Though he's fat and aging, he still has a very sharp mind, and uses it to benefit the Legion. Unfortunately he uses this same mind to find absolutely anything that can benefit his family and/or himself. Otherwise though he's fun-loving, jovial and loves the idea of Peace. His pet dove Icarus, is never far behind.
After them is The Auxiliaries, the archers, mercs and cavalrymen that supplement the cohort.
Epimondas and Xenocrates, a Cretan Archer and Rhodian slinger who always argue and complain with each other. Epimondas is a highly skilled and incredibly skilled archer and knows it. He believes archery is the best and slinging is dumb and obsolete. Xenocrates, being from Rhodes is more level-headed, and tries to explain why slings are good and still is useful.
Druze the Bastarnae, the Silent Bob Mercenary, and many doubt that's even his real name. A big brute that comes and saves the day either in the last minute or charges pell-mell into the enemy just because he can. Someone's gotta fill the role of light infantry, and he has a mighty Falx by his side... He goes to bed with it.
The Antagonist role is filled by The Thracian. A hulking nobleman that has no humorous qualities at all. So huge he wields the two-handed Rhomphaia with only one hand. He leads a band of fellow warriors, causing destruction and arson everywhere they go. They seem to be searching something... Probably something to do with the growing strange reports within the Empire. Whenever he's on the field, everyone is on edge, as his armor is so thick arrows and slings are of no use, and his massive size means he can out-muscle almost everyone.
And finally, The Strange Beasties that the troupe encounters in their travels. Most of 'em are small versions of big critters, but many are the source of strange reports within the Empire.
If possible, I hope to color this thing one day

So, what other strange beasties do you have in mind to include in this story?

Hmmm... If I had my way, I would include more abundant Aurochs and Syrian Elephants. Also, in THIS timeline, Hannibal rode on a Palaeoloxodon namadicus, but he doesn't know it'd be called that in the future. The Irish Elk would probably cameo somewhere in Britain. A Cave Lion would probably serve as a minor antagonist.

Awwww thank you so much! I feel like they're underrepresented in fiction regarding the Romans. Usually people choose "typical" barbarians or gauls, but Thracians look AWESOME .

Yep. That swan looks incredibly ticked off. You really captured the inner rage there. I think this is a really cool idea for a series. Glad I could inspire, even if it was just a little bit.
Overall, the designs look great. Everyone's posture and poses capture their characteristics well. Xenocrates' arms look just a tiny bit too long. If I'm misinterpreting anything, feel free to correct me.

Thank you so much, and yes, I'm very grateful for that
I'm glad you like the designs, and don't worry, you're not misinterpreting anything. Only now do I realize Xeno's arms ARE a tad long, like... it's possible his arms can touch the ground when idle xD.
