Description
Twilight Sparkle goes for a swim with her sub-buds!I really liked this outfit from KanColle so I rolled with it here except with a snorkel because it's a brilliant idea. Sure wish I'd thought of it.
I might be able to knock out Rarity, Pinkie and Rainbow by Bronycon if I don't spend as long on them as I did Twi.
--
Far away, the griffons and felines waged a great, terrible war that spanned land, air and sea. The Equestrians supported their griffon neighbors with much supplies and developed their own navy with which to escort shipments.
The warring parties lost a great deal of ships and sailors to the dark depths. The fear, hatred and death of the sea war manifested into a ghastly fleet of powerful warships that prey on any vessel or aircraft. At first the warring nations could keep the shadows at bay, but they only grew larger and ever more deadly.
Battered and weary from the fighting, the griffons and felines are looking to the ponies to save them. Using their powerful magic, the Equestrians will fight monsters with monsters of their own.
--
Going full Pacific Rim with that last bit, but cut me some slack - that is an awesome line. So yeah, not all that different from KanColle's generally accepted canon. Just better because ponies.

well I will for this review disregard the impression her size makes on this image (its the same as battleship applejack from my last Critique and its still amazing.) someone else pointed out in the comments that you got her mane and tail in the water and how it would actually behave the same way you portrayed it. Other then the amazing detail you put in the lighting, not much to say other then the clear fact you did an amazing job. Only two faults you have are really the same problem; your Russian counterpart already did Twilight as a battleship and that you have portrait alicons in the past a capital ships but other than that small continuity error you've done a fine job and this is a brilliant highlight of your art collection

Thanks bud! I'm kind of going my own way with these - me and DiscordtheGE aren't working together or anything. The Rarity I do will most likely be based on a British ship rather than German, for example. ^^

This piece is gorgeous. The detailing is remarkable. I love the reflection in her eyes how detailed and clear they are. I like the uniform, though I have to admit that it seems a bit impractical based on the activity she is doing. Also, the submarines? They are amazing!!! Super realistic and very well done! They look like something you would see in old movies and the like! Her tail is the only thing that looks a little off to me, as her mane is all floaty like she is slowly moving but the tale is streamed out behind her like she is moving faster than her mane realizes?
Amazing job though, with everything!

This is an overall amazing piece that you have done. I'm always amazed at how your images make the viewers eyes wander your artwork. There's clearly focal points in the art but they blend well enough into the rest of the art that we will linger at one part but it's not for too long.
My favorite aspect of this artwork are the eyes, although I will admit I am biased because I am always drawn to eyes in any piece. The reflection within the irises is immaculate in detail, with the shading creating a nice contrast, again blending it with the rest of the image.
Nothing in life is perfect, and in my opinion will and should never be, as flaws have their own beauty. However, in respect for the concept of a critique I would like to note the snorkel, or rather the bubbles. I cannot say for sure they are holes on the side, but to me they appear as such. If they are holes there should be bubbles coming out of them. Moreover, the bubbles themselves should be more spread out because even if whoever is using the snorkel is stationary, bubbles under slight pressure will attempt to push away from each other (technically it is the water pushing the bubbles away in an effort to not be separated) and if the person (or in this case pony) is moving the bubbles are a good (if possibly only) way to show that she is indeed moving.
An overall amazing piece as always.

Hey NC, as I mentioned on Discord, I feel fairly unqualified to write a critique as I can barely assemble a drawing myself. However, your request called to me, and I feel like I can deliver thoughtful remarks despite my own lack of experience. On the vision front, you did a fantastic job. Much like Ms. Sparkle, I’m immersed in the world. I don’t even have to go through your description to feel the vibe of this art. There is some conflict. There are big ponies, or tiny submarines, and they come together in a curious seascape that captures the murky colors of the unknown as well as the bright sunshine of optimism.
Originality in this context is a bit hard for me to evaluate given the multiple threads of inspiration that are coming together to make this piece, so I think I’ll largely leave that alone and move on to technique and impact. The way you drew Twilight is simply stunning. I can feel the weight of her uniform through my imagination. If I sit and stare at this piece long enough, I can sense that texture. That doesn’t happen through luck. That happens through talent, and you’ve got it. My one criticism on this front, if you even want to call it that, is that I, personally, find the dichotomy between the mane/tail and skirt underwater mechanics to be a little odd. Twilight’s mane is very flowy. The contours are smooth and whimsical, producing a floating type atmosphere. The skirt, conversely, has some very hard edges to it that stood out from the whimsical counterpart. Of course, this prodded me to look at some references, and hard juts and whatnot are completely possible. I’m not casting this as either a right or wrong, but it might be worth thinking about in the future.
To me, the impact is solidified by four features. The color contrast between the murky ocean and the light shining on Twilight pops. Twilight’s eyes are stupendously drawn. The details in the uniform generate a texture that lingers in my imagination, and finally, the little extra details put into the submarine buddies give it a boost. You did a great job! Keep it up!

For a second, I thought that sub was trying to look up Twilight's skirt. If only her back-left paddle was layered over it.

It makes me want to find my tablet, or my pencils at the very least and draw again! If only I wasn't stuck behind a desk.
Fantastic and truly inspiring artwork!

Man, I don't know if this macro thing is a fetish of yours or if you just like the dynamic in an artsy way or both but I really enjoy how epic it makes our pony friends! The thought of having a giant cute animal friend on your side makes me happy. This is the first underwater picture I've seen in your gallery and I adore underwater pictures and this one is no exception. I really like how you got down the underwater hair look that is often difficult to draw but also fun to draw. I can't really tell though if the copy pasted blobs are schools of fish or bubbles but either way, I think you did this well. I'm jealous of your ability to draw subs and boats.

I think big ol' ponies are just plain cute, haha. Even better when they're adorable badasses!
Thanks a lot, bud - I'm glad you think so. It's true, this is the first underwater scene I've really undertaken and it took many, many hours to chalk up. It was a lot of fun though and I learned a lot.
These ship-pons have been a great opportunity to try new things and work on the elements I struggle with such as composition, perspective and scenery. ^^

Wow. Just. Wow. I could go on and on about how this picture is awesome, but all is here: everything is awesome. The way her mane and float in the water, the light and shadows, the colors... Seriously, I can't see anything wrong with this picture. I wouldn't have thought of Twilight as a submarine, but eh, you are the one choosing. The execution is completely awesome anyway, and each hours you took working on it was worth it. Way to go, NC!

Ans what do you have in mind for Changeling Enemys?

Thank you, bud! I was actually rolling with the idea that the enemies wouldn't be characters or even 'alive' myself.
Commissions will eventually open up again and I'll go ahead and toss up announcements when the time comes. :]
I'll be honest though, I don't think I'll take on any ship-pons. These take a very long time to do and would run for $300, minimum. :[ For both our sakes I think it best to steer clear of these big pieces.
