"Self-flagellation" is what my therapist calls this. It never feels like I'm doing it to myself, though. To me it feels like I'm just saying what everyone else is already thinking. Even now, when I'm feeling relatively good about myself, it's hard not to think I'm still failing as a person in every conceivable aspect of my life, and that it's all either out of my control or completely my fault, making for a delectable blend of despair and self-loathing.
