Description I've frequently been asked about how I paint hair. The explanation is longer than could be given in a simple comment, so I decided to make a tutorial. I wanted to share some of the tricks and techniques I've discovered that have made the process so much easier and quicker than my previous methods when I first started working digitally. I'm still learning and developing my techniques, but this tutorial is what is at the core.

I use Painter (currently Painter X) but the methods decribed should easily translate to Photoshop (or any other Painting program that allows for customs brushes and has similar features.)

Hope you enjoy and find something useful.

i am having a hard time replicating your speckle brush. i tryed to cap dap and i also tried to edit the coarse spray in the airbrushes category and it still comes out very harsh and rake like with no soft fading or blending at all. do you know which airbrush you edited specifically?

This is one of the most amazing hair tutorials I've seen. I thought I had seen them all until I cam across this. It has really helped me, and I'm definitely going to try it out. As of now, I suck at painting hair.

Thank you so much.

Hi. thanks. I haven't tried Painter 11 yet ( I do have the demo though) so anything I say will be based on Painter X.

For the speckles, I used a Airbrush brush that had a varied and scattered spread (instead of a smooth stream) then adjusted it until I got a nice variety of speck sizes. To give me a lot of possible brush swatches to choose from, I laid down a good size area or specks. For a more controlled brush shape I also painted randomly spaced dots using any single marking brush tool.

Once I had a varied selection of specks/dots on the canvas, I used the selection tool (Rectangle) and chose a spot to select. In Brushes (I'm typing this from memory, so not sure on exact choices.) there should be a "Capture" option. Once you've captured the swatch to be your Brush pattern, open the Brush edit and play around with it. Make sure to save it when you're done as some other brush name or you may write over a default brush.
