Description I've wanted to draw this for a while now. A scene from the last chapter of The Minstrel's Path .

*****

Cantus said, "I wonder where the water goes."

They both knew the answer to that. Water circulated through the rock, flowing downward through channels and cracks, soaking through soil and stone, disappearing into the air to rise and condense elsewhere to begin the cycle anew. But Murray knew a philosophical question when he heard one, and had no answer.

Cantus smiled. "When did you get so much younger than me?" he asked softly.

Startled, Murray said, "Don't talk like that, boss."

"Pisca must live longer than Fraggles. That's good." He closed his eyes and said softly, "I'm tired."

"I'll set up your tent."

"I want to listen a while longer." He reached over to his pack, took out the Magic Pipe, and held it out to Murray. It trembled in the air, though Cantus' expression was calm.

Murray took the Pipe. He was raising it to play it when Cantus held up his hand. A zigzag glowed softly in his palm. "Touch your hand to mine."

Puzzled, Murray touched Cantus's hand. Cantus gripped it for a moment, pressing their palms together. Then he let go. The mark had disappeared. Murray glanced at his own hand. The zigzag shone back at him.

Murray looked at Cantus, shocked. Calmly Cantus told him, "The Magic Pipe is yours. Let it be your voice as it has been mine."

Murray's eyes widened. Cantus was making him the leader of the Minstrels! Yes, he was getting too old to journey, but making music without him was still unthinkable. He said, "I'll never be half the Minstrel you are, Cantus."

"Then be all the Minstrel you are."

aww, brilliant story, what a bittersweet ending,
it is tragic yet heartwarming, like Cantus trusting Murray to continue the tradition of the Minstrels.

to me, it also reminds me of Jim Henson (Cantus) handing down the role of Kermit to Steve Whitmire (Murray)....

Thanks. Yeah, every piece of music has its end. But Cantus had a long life, and enjoyed every bit of it, even the parts that tested his implacable calm. He's ready to let go. Murray's not so ready, but there are some things you just don't have a choice about.

I didn't think about the parallel with Whitmire taking on Kermit, but you have a good point. Henson had picked Whitmire to be a backup Kermit, for those times when Henson was too busy, but died before that was implemented. So, he didn't officially hand Kermit to Whitmire, we know that he would have.

yeah, i think Whitmire was the perfect successor for Henson.
And i think Cantus made the perfect decision choosing his trusted friend, Murray, to follow his footsteps.

I like what you just said "every piece of music has its end." i didnt realy think of life like that. so true and makes sence...

Seriously? I'd like to see that. I've been half-hoping you'd get inspired to draw Cantus eventually. Only half, however, because I'm scared you'd draw him as a chain-smoking wino. That would make Janken cry, and you don't want to see him cry. I'm serious. We're talking snot-blobs.

Heh, no... no... the chain-smoking wino fraggles are from Bizarro World or something. Even Bizarro Cantus would be too cool for that life style. Although, I think he may smoke Hobbit weed.

Ewww... I can only deal with my own snot.

Yeah. Janken has the epic schnoz he inherited from Papa Wembley, plus sheer volume from Mama Mokey, so he's got some king-sized snot glands. However, as Fraggles have no nostrils that I can see, I have no clue how the snot gets out.

Bizarro Cantus is probably a power-hungry political type. Imagine Convincing John, if John had any actual ambition.

I'd rather not know where fraggle snog collects. It could seep out of their pores.

Yeah, Bizarro Cantus would be a jerk.

Fraggles snogging is a different matter altogether. Although it does involve their noses, but mainly as obstacles.

They can kinda work their lips in there though.

With Wembley that might be quite a task. That nose eclipses most everything else.

His schnoz is quite ... prehensile.

Oh this..
I'm going to be honest here, I've gone all teary-eyed over this. You've drawn the scene so wonderfully, capturing all of the emotion. It's such a sad moment, but sweet in a way, too.
And so glad we finally get a Murray pic His face is so full of character, and I love the pink highlights!

Ah, any day in which I make someone cry, in which I can inspire someone to curse at their neighbors or strike a child, I feel I have dome something to be proud of.

Hee hee. Kidding, of course. It's an emotional moment, and those are very hard to draw and get right. Murray gave me fits because of that 'stache-like fluff covering part of his mouth. And those weird eyelids; I had to fudge 'em a bit so he didn't look like he was squinting nearsightedly at Cantus.

Murray's baloobius also has those hot pink (magenta?) highlights. And they're the same color as Cantus's's's's plumage hair. Coincidence?

Very intense feelings here. You have definitely achieved emotional intensity.
Yeah, I can see that giving you trouble. But you did a very good job on him, given the lack of decent shots in the show. And yes! Those eyes xD
Hmm... Interesting... very intriguing

Nice one! Murray turned out wonderful in your hands! As always, you draw Cantus perfectly, and the mood of the ending of the story is captured perfectly here.
