Description
No, they aren't uncomfortable. They were more comfortable than many of my heels, to be honest.Yes, they are heavy.
But the added weight helped keep me upright.
I was able to walk around all night, up and down stairs, as well as dance, with no trouble.
Materials Used
Old platform boots with the heels removed, and a wooden platform attached to the bottoms for added height.
Wire mesh (window screen, to be exact)
Paper mache
Bondo
Ardex Feather Finish Cement
Acrylic paint
Polyurethane
Craft foam sheets & faux leather (hot glued on) for the "armor"
*edit* I was just popping on before bed and saw a DD?? Holy cow, thank you so much :0 *dies of joy*

What kind of bondo did you use? The wood filler kind or the kind used for Cars?

I have been wracking my brain on how to make 2 peices of wood curve and shape like hoofs. Alot of people use Resin, or even rubber molds to make hoofs. I not having that kind of cash, thought i would make my own!!!
My boots are not platforms, so ill have to use a BIT more wood then that. BUT. I cant wait to give this a shot!!! Im so excited!!!!
I know this was posted forever ago, but this helps greatly with my Fawn Cosplay!!! and i dont have to pay 300 dollars for someone to make me a pair of hoof shoes!!! (only mine will be covered in fur) :3
THANK YOU!!!~

If you were making paws, rather than hooves...would you need the wooden blocks? Just wondering...

Nicely done. I love that they turned out comfortable and easy to walk in. I think I'll use this for my friend's cosplay because that was my main concern when she asked me to make hooves for her.

Would you be able to wear these without the added wood on the bottom, you think? I'm considering using this for a pony cosplay but I don't think I want hooves that are quite that big.

Cool work , but i totally can see they must be heavy has hell , since the cement comes into play. I been planning on making my own , and probably , will try to use something heavy , since i just dont believe light weight materials can mantain you upright. Im going to a second hand store , but id love to get some actual horse shoes for the clip clop sounds and the added weight.
Just a question , are they too hot to use? Cause with the closed toes , the coverings , the cement and everything , they kinda look like a sauna.

Isn't it... unstable a bit?D: I mean, don't you have to stand on your tiptoes?

nekokelly In reply to Szejdi-Szejdi [2011-10-06 22:57:58 +0000 UTC]
Not tiptoe like while wearing pointe shoes for ballet, but on the balls of your feet like if you're walking around tiptoe. It's essentially the same way I walk while I'm wearing very tall, spiked heels, so I'm pretty used to it. While standing still, when I'd normally distribute my weight more evenly over the shoe if it had a heel, the added weight and lack of flex actually helped to keep me forward and up on my toes, rather than try to lean back on my heels. It was fatiguing to stand still for long periods, but walking and dancing weren't any trouble.

I probably already commented on this, but this is really awesome. I'm going to attempt to make my own pair for a cosplay using your tutorial. I just hope all my years of walking on my toes for fun will pay off. xD

Out of curiosity, you say you're good at walking around and dancing and such, but how are the grips on them? Can you jump or jog at all in them? Asking because this looks like it could adapt fantastically into demon claws, but I enjoy slinking around and creepy movement (which would be ruined by a faceplant trying to perch on a table). Fantastically detailed tutorial, by the way!

They are *heavy* and brittle. Jumping isn't recommended lol. I could slink and creep, I suppose, but everyone would hear me coming and my legs would be sore tomorrow...These were a beta attempt at making hooves, and I really didn't expect to get a DD off of this (i only posted this because a few people asked), and in all honesty, I'd say just take inspiration from the guide then find something better to use than /cement/ for 'em x__x

Yeah, definately sketching up alternative designs and mechanisms since I wouldn't be going for the straight-up hooves look, but your idea for the base was brilliant and design-wise I love the dehumanizing idea of the raised heel. I suppose I'll have to keep an eye out for scrappable boots to run movement tests on. Even though it's like a version 1.0 this is still an excellent tutorial.

Well, I wouldn't want to wear them every day--and that's mainly because of the /weight/, but they were totally manageable for a night on the town

Yea, it was very useful ...but i do have a question...probably stupid but i still have to ask...when you heat up the clay so it will harden..would the heat melt the boots? Or is it just hot enough to heat up the clay an harden it?..i know thats probably dumb to ask ^-^"

nekokelly In reply to Moonsong23 [2010-05-22 02:41:01 +0000 UTC]
There wasn't any clay used to make the hooves...i didn't have to heat up anything. Not a stupid question at all though, really.
