This is my amazing Midna Costume! I won Best of Saturday at Otakon 2010! This was my first really big win. I worked on this costume off and on for 3 years. I made three different versions of the bodysuit before I was even remotely satisfied. I'm wearing a home-made fat suit under the bodysuit to give me those big Midna hips, so sorry, my butt is not real! I painted resist onto a white cotton lycra blend, and then painted a thickened dye onto it. The runes are a glow-in-the-dark silkscreen paint with pearlized pigments to give a shimmer. The helm is made of a foam that is similar to a stiffer upholstery foam. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what it is exactly, as i bought it off a guy on craigslist XD. The wig is a hand dyed yellow Femme Fatal wig from Amphegory with a giant mass of extension on top of a form made from quiting batting. The helm is only 4lbs, so it's not too bad. It's also very well balanced with the hair and horns being opposite. All the runes are actually carved into the foam. It's coated with several layers of stone spray paint. I've glued a white and a black piece of leather to my soles, and I'm wearing a red scalar lens in my exposed eye.Before I left Utah, I knew I had to do a photoshoot at the Castle behind the mental hospital! So a few weeks before I left, I got my friends Elrowiel and The Lorax and we went and took pictures for a few hours.

A lot of patience. I made templates of the surfaces in cardstock, and then I sketched the designs in pencil. Then I scored the cardstock and pinned the templates on the foam and cut into them with an exacto knife. Then I used a jerry-rigged double bladed exacto knife to cut the full channels. It'd then cut out the small strip that was made and that was it. I did paint some of the details on, like the greek key symbols on the top middle front, and the curls in the top of the horns, but that's how the model was done, so that's what looked best to me. The raised parts are all sections of foam that were carved to match the model. It took a long time....

For the hair I did the main part with a yellow femme fatal wig from Amphegory. I used reds and oranges to get it that color. It was my first time dying a wig, so I'm glad it was *supposed* to be streaky.... I also dyed some yellow hair extensions for the "hand" part. The base of the "hand is several layers of quilting batting, and then I just spray-glued the hair extensions over it. I did dye the quilting batting as well, cause otherwise you could see the white show through pretty bad. The whole thing actually comes apart for travel, so the hand detaches from the main part of the hair, and her hair-clip thingy covers the place where they meet. Yes!! If you do post up progress shots and explanations of them, please let me know, I really appreciate that! Because when I was thinking about my future Midna cosplay, I was kind of puzzled on how to do the hair. Honestly you did yours PERFECTLY. It's the only Midna cosplay I have ever, EVER seen with such perfectly done hair.

It was off and on for those 3 years, but it allowed me to make a lot of mistakes that no one else ever had to see. I tried to make my helm in a totally different way at first, and that *so* didn't work out. Any my first bodysuit.... man, I should probably burn that thing it looks so bad... I have a lot of photos, and I hope to post some more in depth tutorials, but that would require me, I dunno, actually putting those photos into some semblance of and order.... I'll get to it eventually

I've taken it to three so far, I'm planning on taking it to several more this summer. I'll probably double up on several as well. I never get sick of my costumes in general, and I'm often improving them.

Thanks! Yeah, I really wanted to get as close to the proportions as I could. Most Midna cosplayers just make a hat, I wanted a real, full-sized helm, without it being to crazy...
I am wearing a fat suit. I realized if I wanted to look right, I was going to have to alter my proportions. I'm just not *that* curvy IRL...
