Wait... I think I mis-wrote my last comment.
What I meant to say is that if you read the Bible without granting absolute divine authority to Yahweh you will realize that he IS an evil character, and definitely the bad guy of The Bible (I think I wrote the opposite... damn). Yahweh commits genocide and encourages his followers to commit genocide as well. He is jealous of gods who don't even exist according to him. He's a misogynist who teaches that women are less than men. He sends people to a place of eternal torment if you don't believe the legend of his son Jesus the cosmic carpenter born from a virgin, and sends people to a place of eternal bliss even if they were criminals and murderers, as long as they convert in their deathbed, among numerous things. In short, Yahweh, the god portrayed in the Bible, is an absolute monster.
The thing is that Christians tend to grant divine unquestionable authority to this Yahweh character, and thus they rationalize all of his evil actions as actions of infinite love and kindness... even genocide and infanticide. And letting little kids suffer and die of cancer.
That's what I meant: If what you think is that Yahweh is good, then once again, read the damn Bible without giving Yahweh a free pass for his evil actions, and you might change your mind. If you think Yahweh is evil, then sorry for the misunderstanding

I am simply showing my opinion. So far as a devote believer, I have been blessed by showing kindness to others and not to judge. I make mistakes, but I own up to them as much as I can. So far being like God and giving him the credit has allowed me to come from very dark times in my life.
So I am wondering how on earth does serving God, who gives many blessings, could be considered evil?
But seriously, if anyone wants to believe in this, who am I to stop you? I'm just merely saying my opinion.

You study the Bible yet you still believe the god portrayed in it is good? I wonder how you guys deal with the cognitive dissonance: your god murders his own creations, makes them pit against each other, commits genocide, is an unfair and jealous monster, yet all he does it good and kind and perfect... damn.

Why not? According to the Bible Satan gave us free thinking. We would've been slaves of God.
Though, all of that is silly in my opinion. A god that's all-knowing and all powerful would know better than to create a being that could release the humans he had created.

One it says God gave us Free will, he gave us Free will in the Garden whether or not to Eat the Fruit of knowledge. He wanted to have faith in us, however human nature got in the way. So once the fall, He decided not to destroy us and do over instead allowed humans to decided their path on earth till this day.

Actually, if Yahweh is omniscient, then he knows beforehand the entire life of each person that is born, and all the choices they will make in their life. This means he knows beforehand who goes to his heaven and who goes to his hell. Your god creates souls who he knows beforehand are going to hell, so they didn't have any chance for "salvation" from the beginning. They were doomed from the start of their lives; they just don't know it because they don't know their own futile future.
In short: your god is an unfair monster. Vishnu is better

What I don't understand is why he would design us with free will, and then punish us for using it. That seems underhanded to me, and not very 'good' or 'holy'. More like a trick instead of a test of faith.
I also don't understand why Lucifer is so horrible; he disagreed with God, thought for himself, and didn't bend absolutely to God's will without question. So what happened? He was cast from Heaven.
You say that "...He decided not to destroy us and do over instead allowed humans to decided their path on earth till this day." But if we do not decide to follow him absolutely, he will cast us out of the Kingdom of Heaven just like he did his best angel for the same 'crime'. Sounds like trickery to me, or the behavior of a spoiled only child who has always gotten what he wants and nothing else.
I am failing to see how one cannot argue that maybe god isn't the god guy...
(not trying to be a bitch, just questioning things)

I feel your pain. I struggled with the same issue for a good portion of my life. And the answer is confusinglysimple. We are not being punished (he only gives that to his children that need to be guided back to the right path) we are living in complete betrayal of our Creator. When someone dies still living in sin, He grieves for the lost soul and yet gets passed at the evil that caused that to happen.
Perfectioncannot coexist with any form of darkness. And yet His ultimate wisdom and love provided a way for us to be made perfect through the sacrifice.of His only.Son. I hope this helps.
I am always open to be corrected. Are you?

Well, one could argue that we wouldn't have had free will if Satan hadn't persuaded Eve.
(I'm just challenging different ideas now). How about the amount of humans killed by God vs Satan. I don't know the exact statistics, but I'm pretty sure God killed more people than Satan did. Directly, at least. Not influenced or whatever someone may claim.
Oh and hey I hope you're not taking this like I'm one of those people on the Internet that just yells at you. I'm not trying to be. 'Promise.

I remember being told that "the evil and wrong-doers will go to hell and be punished." and I would think=
This hell is ruled by the devil who is suppose to tempt people away from the christian god...so why would the ones he tempted away be punished?
Wouldn't he want to reward those so word would get out and more be tempted?
The fear of being punished would prevent people from wanting to go there, so that is nothing more than scare tactic was by Christians.

He brought the knowledge of GOOD and EVIL. Apparently God wanted people to be too ignorant to know the difference.
You can't truly be a good person unless you can choose to be good, unless bad is actually an option.
Plus for the record, Satan never killed anyone. God did all the killing and demanding of sacrifices. In the fact, the Bible has a whole list of different "sins" requiring different Sacrifices.
I grew up a hard core Christian, until I realized how ridiculous all the doctrine was.

Nope, god was all good, there wasnt evil, satan show what was, so then the "good" and "evil" was created,
.
good didnt exist, because it was normal to be like that, but then satan show to adan and eve what evil was.
and no, god didnt did all the killings
satan kill alot of people inside, the murders, the sickness, everything, was made by him, all the colera,
sodoma y gomorra, how was that?
i read all the bible around 5 times, and to be honest i dont know what the heck are you talking about
im not even a christian.
yet, i know alot about it
did you read the bible or you just learn across the internet?
you shouldnt read the bible in one lense,
most of the time, everything has double meaning.
for example, you can see that people in sodoma and gomorra, didnt die, in fact they were dead inside, by all the bad things/
god didnt kill them, he show them how bad they were,
dont look back, or you will be salt.
you cant really read between lines?
my english is horrible.

According to the Bible, Satan/the serpent in Eden tempted Eve & Adam into eating from the "The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil." If they had not eaten from that tree, they would not understand the difference between right and wrong, good and evil.
God did not do all of the killing in the bible, you are right in that. But he certainly did quite a few. He drowned the entire planet save one family, destroyed entire cities.
These things like murder, sickness, death... you can say that Satan is causing them, sure. But you can't pretend God's not at fault. God created all things, including Satan and Hell, according to the Bible. If God is all-knowing, he would have known Satan was up to no good. If he did know, then why did God create Satan? It makes no sense.
Side note, the people in Sodom and Gomorrah did die, in the book. God said he would spare the cities if there were but a few righteous people in them. He sent his angels and found out that there weren't any. So, he destroyed the cities, meaning those people were killed. Including Lot's wife, who was turned into a pillar of salt simply for LOOKING at the destruction.

MauEvig In reply to Saturnforxy [2013-09-08 00:00:05 +0000 UTC]
I've read the Bible, of course not the entire part because I got bored with all the laws and genealogy and such.
So you show someone how bad you are by killing them? Yet...later on he had "Jesus" to die for their sins. People have done far worse things nowadays than they have in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, but as long as you ask Jesus to be your lord and savior now suddenly you're magically forgiven. Wow.
You also have to remember one important detail...God created Satan. Knowing that Satan would defy him. Knowing Satan would introduce the knowledge of good and evil to the world.
If they are so evil and corrupt inside, why kill innocent children? God did plenty of that.
"Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all – old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the Temple!" the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" So they went throughout the city and did as they were told." (Ezekiel 9:5-7 NLT)
The glory of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived. Even if your children do survive to grow up, I will take them from you. It will be a terrible day when I turn away and leave you alone. I have watched Israel become as beautiful and pleasant as Tyre. But now Israel will bring out her children to be slaughtered." O LORD, what should I request for your people? I will ask for wombs that don't give birth and breasts that give no milk. The LORD says, "All their wickedness began at Gilgal; there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my land because of their evil actions. I will love them no more because all their leaders are rebels. The people of Israel are stricken. Their roots are dried up; they will bear no more fruit. And if they give birth, I will slaughter their beloved children." (Hosea 9:11-16 NLT)
So apparently...it's evil to not even believe in God. So by that logic, if you're not a Christian, yet know the Bible...then it would be perfectly righteous in God's eyes to kill you.
They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)
