Description
This was done for Epilogue's "Season of Renewal" competetion, with artists creating what comes to mind when thinking about the concept of renewal. I chose to do something symbolic- not unlike the celtic myth of the selkies, or a snake shedding its skin. I think the theme is pretty straigt-forward, so I won't elaborate.I haven't got a snowflake's chance in hell of winning, but I really don't care anymore. This piece has deep personal significance to me, and I have impressed my harshest critic (myself), so I am content.
I was thinking I might add some more detail, then again, I could get over-zealous and wreck the piece completely...
This piece is dedicated to anyone who is starting a new phase in their life.
Oh yeah, and I couldn't fit the whole piece onto the scanner, so check any updates on this to see the whole thing.

Simply beautiful! and relevant to so many lives.
my only complaint is that she has no pubic hair.. people come with hair.. Even people from the far north have hair. -is it just a cultural thing why hairs not shown in art and waxed on porn models?

I was taking some artistic license with this piece, copying the style of how naked women were depicted in classical paintings. The lack of pubic hair in both classical art and some vintage soft-pornography (it used to be air-brushed out) was often because pubic hair was considered too erotic. I guess I wanted to de-sexualise this piece.

I've experienced this once in my life... it was like a breath of crisp fresh air.
May I ask you, what medium is this? Did you use colored pencils, and what kind were they?

It was done in watercolour and white gouache.

Gouache, huh? Now there's a new word. It must be some sort of paint, I think. Like a transparent paint?

It's sorta like a mix between acrylics and watercolours...you can get watercolour effects with it, but it's also got more substance.

I think the way that her hair flows out in the wind is so beautiful. One can almost feel the refreshing breeze, and smell the breath of springtime upon it.

Beautiful! It's such a wonderful concept - you've depicted it remarkably well. I've always been fascinated by the idea of beginning a new life; of shedding an old skin, just like a snake. I'd find this a really difficult scene to draw, especially the 'old skin', so this is especially impressive. I love the wrinkles you've done in the skin, giving it the old feeling, and the way it just looks like a discarded piece of clothing. Also interesting is the use of colour - the dark, cool purples mixed with the golds, and how the mountains and the shadow thrown by the shed skin can't quite dim the brightness of the cold. I just love symbolism like that - right now I'm especially into colour symbolism
Definite fave
