Nice tutorial. Yeah, sprites are useful. I made first experiences with them last year.
Very helpful for people who didn't know about this way to display images very fast.

Why you do that? There are thousands of tutorials like that, and done better. Biggest problem is that yours is a picture, so nobody can copy and study the code.

Well, there's nothing new under the sun. The technique is there for ages, of course, but I wish more people were using it, so I made this tutorial to introduce the basics and encourage people to research it further.
For one, you don't seem to use it at your own site at the moment. Before all graphics are downloaded, buttons whose hover states haven't downloaded yet turn into blank rectangles upon hovering - an exact problem sprites help you avoid.
I've listed some in-depth tutorials on the subject in artist's comment, but if you know others as helpful - please, give the links, I'll add them too.
