Here's my first ever cosplay tutorial. I still think it's really lame, but ~Semashke said she'd have my hide if didin't share it. So here ya go.You can see my coat here : [link]

I've posted a comment regarding the amount of fabrics, so I hope you don't mind if I just copy and paste it:
I don't remember exactly how much fabric I used, but no less than 4 meters, maybe even 5 meters of both lining and outer fabric. But that mostly depends on your height and how long you want the coat to be. And also the width of fabric you're buying. Mine were 1,5m wide.
As for the dye, I used two 50ml bottles of light blue, one dark blue and one white. But that may also depend on the kind of dye you're using

The white one? I made patterns from a tight fitting turtleneck, extending it to make the "tails". This only works if you're using stretchy material, by the way. My jacket didn't open at the front, it was only an imitation, while the actual zipper was on the back of the collar. The rest is decoration

WOW!! luv your fai coat!!! its very beautiful!!!!! quick question tho, how many yards of fabric did u use for the coat? & how did u attache the sleeves to the coat? those r my 2 biggest concerns at this point and time as im currently planning my own "variation" of fai for halloween 2013, as my social group usually gets to together for a costume party & the last 3yrs we've done this party i've made my own costumes....my very 1st yr i went as lydia deetz from the beetlejuice cartoon from the 80's!! it was a popular show when i was little. now this year i wanna do a fai cosplay. problem is im a girl, & my chest isnt exactly flat as a cutting board either, lol! so i again, like last yr, will need to improvise on this one & since i'm going as fai when he was turned into a vampire, my plan is to make a female version of fai from another dimension, but i'll definitely be the coolest vampire chick at the party this yr, dont u agree? lol anywho would be very grateful if u could answer my 2 questions above. thanks in advance!!

As for the questions, I'm not sure how many yards, but I used up about 4 meters of outer fabric and the same amount for the lining. About the sleeves - most important thing is getting a good pattern. The sleeve and shoulder cut outs have to match lengthwise at the seam and the sleeve also has a fancy curve... I can't really explain, but if you plan on a buying pattern, then all you'll have to do is fit the sleeve into the shoulder and sew. Good luck!

Sorry for the wait. I didn't really transfer it in any fancy way, I just put the stencil on the fabric and used a simple pencil to trace it

About the top underneath the coat, well, I basically made the pattern from clothes I had, sewn it together, adding an invisible zipper at the back of the neck. I used a very stretchy synthetic fabric for this. I made a fake "parting" (sorry, for the lack of vocabulary on this) at the front, by folding blue ribbon and sewing it on so it would look like the coat opens at the front.The belts around the chest required some precise measuring and aligning before sewing, because they do not stretch like the rest of the fabric. I made the golden buckles out of craft foam. The last part was painting blue designs at the back of the neck and bottom of the flaps at the back. These designs only appear in the artworks, so they're not absolutely necessary. Also, the fabric I used for this turned out to be slightly translucent, so I made a sort of undershirt that matched the upper part of the top from the same material. I had to do this all in a matter of three days, because I was running out of time, so I don't have any pictures that would make a decent tutorial. But I hope this will help you at least somewhat
As for the materials, I'll try to list them, but a lot of time has passed, so I might forget something and I hardly remember the measurements. Here goes. For the outer coat: white cotton, blue gabardine, white fur, white and blue fabric dye, different size brushes, lots of small containers for mixing shades of dye, black textile markers, old newspapers and wallpaper for blue design templates, some black material for stripes on the sleeves.
For the undercoat: white stretchy material, several meters of blue ribbon for the edges and front, white zipper, black belt-like strips, craft foam, golden acrylic dye, white glue and clear nail polish for hardening the buckles, hot glue for gluing them onto the belts. You may try to make his gloves from black stretchy material, but I bought mine.
And of course all the regular stuff - scissors, needles, lots of blue and white thread, some black thread, pins...

What was the method you used for making the coat pattern? Did you use math or did you drape it on a dress form?

Neither, actually, I've never even tried those
For this coat I just looked through a lot of reference pictures, WIP shots of other cosplayers and cut out the approximate pattern, then adjusted it using trial and error method - stitching the coat together and trying it on, then fixing the pattern where needed.
It's quite a log process, definitely not one professionals would use, but it worked for me

I know a lot of people have said this but thank you for this tutorial!! <3 <3 <3 <3 the finished coat looks great, me and my friend are going to work on this together so hopefully it works out great. what i was wondering, how did you sew the outer coat with the blue lining? i never really understood how to do that.. >.>

The lining in this case is pretty easy. Since all the seams would be hidden by fur, you just have to put together the complete white and blue parts with their good sides facing out, going along the edge fold the materials inside a bit if you want a neater look and then just sew along the edge, no need to bother hiding it - again, yay for the fur

Just for help for a future fai cosplayer...How much fabric did you use o3o Like, could you share some patterns to make the basic coat/sleeve/hood look? The design I'm making myself so yeah xD No problems there. I just really wondered how much fabric I needed to buy

About the patterns, well, I don't really have them xD I just used some old self-made ones, but only the upper parts - mostly to make sure the sleeves would fit in nicely. The rest was cutting out approximately what I thought I needed, just slightly larger and then trying it on and altering what didn't look right
The hood was a total case of "I have no idea what I'm doing--ooh, this'll do". It's basically two rectangles sewn together xD
