Description Two divine wolves, two epic games Amaterasu from Okami and Link from Twilight Princess. I've had this idea in my head for years but I had to learn to draw wolves first (and uh... learn to not suck). And before you ask, the text just says "Link" in Hylian and "Amaterasu-Omikami" in kanji.

Painted May 2010. [SAI, Painter 11, Photoshop CS4] (yup, it's 100% digital!) You can see a close-up here: [link]

(Extra nerdery: I like the Wind Waker Hylian script better than the Twilight Princess ones, so a bit of anachronism/artistic license there )

(Extra extra nerdery: Ammy has on the Trinity Mirror, which "represents the unification of Knowledge, Power, and Faith." Hm )

Well, I guess there is one part not completely digital - the paper texture I scanned for the little flecks on the Okami side

It seems like magic to me too Basically, the watercolor brushes in SAI are holy crap awesome, especially if you use a blobby or splotchy brush tip. You can also get some watercolor effects in Painter, but it was too slow-going for me.

In SAI, that is XD
I don't see any haha,

There should be a default "Water" brush in the brush palette, but you can also create new ones by choosing "WaterCol" in the right-click menu... at least, they're there in the version I have, dunno if they're a newer addition or not. If you still can't get them, try tweaking with the settings in the other brushes - the important thing is to have a brush that's got a decent amount of Blending and Dilution.

Oh, you can also turn on the "Fringe" effect in the layers to give it a little extra water look, but don't overuse it! I recommend doing several different layers of color, just like how you would use real watercolors.

Very true! The parallelism is the whole reason I did this painting.

(Don't forget their little companions too! I wanted to put them in the picture but it didn't work with the composition.)

Oh! Oh! OH MY STARS!
This is amazing!
The masterfully executed styles, which are so wildly different but here they look like one. The sort of yin-yang feel of both the colors of Ammy and Link as well as expressions!
I don't think I've ever seen such a beautiful blend of the two games. They always seem so cheesey when stuck together, but this is fantastic!
I feel cool for seeing such a great piece before it became the most popular on search or something. I've always wanted to have done that. ^^

I reallly really like the offical art feel to this piece! i mean u got the special 'tp strokes' ( i've had a great deal of problems trying to recreate that >> berfail)
in the sky and the overall thing! almost looks like something Yusuke Nakano himself wipped up with wolf link there.

And as for Amy, it looks like straight from the game, spot on with hte Sumi-e brush style technique. Lightning is wonderful too, really epic masterpiece!

Nendil In reply to StephaniaArts [2010-05-18 16:43:58 +0000 UTC]

You're so right, I thought the "TP strokes" would be easy but it was actually much less simple than I thought. I still didn't recreate it perfectly in the end but I got close

StephaniaArts In reply to Nendil [2010-05-18 16:46:35 +0000 UTC]

I may soumd like a total beggar artist like this, but may I ask how you made it? I have been fighting for ages trying to get that look in my works, but to no avail

I must also say I love the way you incorprate vibrant colors and lighting into your worksthey become so alive to the eye

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nendil In reply to StephaniaArts [2010-05-18 16:55:50 +0000 UTC]

Which half?

The TP part - I think the biggest key is that it's not all made with scratchy brushes, especially in detail areas. Paint a normal base with all the shading first (which I didn't do), then rough it up with the scratches. I used SAI's brush tool with a Rough_Round_1 tip, but you can find/make similar brushes in other programs. Oh, and make sure to use a lot of color diversity - it gives depth and texture to the scratches.

The Okami part - the brush strokes were done with Painter's sumi-e brush, then I "wetted" it up with SAI's awesome watercolor brush. The actual painting part wasn't too hard, studying brush painting techniques is much more important.

Hope that helps a bit, if you have further questions feel free to ask

thank you!!!

one last question - the awesome twilight lightning. how did you go about making it so...glowy?

thans so much for answering my questions

Nendil In reply to StephaniaArts [2010-05-18 17:11:41 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that was something I was learning myself as I was painting it. The key is to 1) put a saturated color between the less saturated highlight and shadow areas, in this case orange, and 2) don't make the areas surrounding the highlights too bright, even though you feel like it should be because that's where the light is. It also helps that Wolf Link's coloring naturally makes him look glowy - the art designers on that game are good.

StephaniaArts In reply to Nendil [2010-05-18 17:14:54 +0000 UTC]

ah I see, I'll have to try out that then XD and finally, as I don't have SAI, is there any way I can do the scratch brush effect using CS3?

and that they re, I am a great fan of their main Zelda illustrator, Yusuke Nakano Man, he's the man that made the official art to oot and tp too. Of what I know, he has made all hte official Zelda art

Nendil In reply to StephaniaArts [2010-05-18 17:23:45 +0000 UTC]

The only thing I'm sad about with Photoshop is that (as far as I know) it doesn't have any options for the brush to pick up color that you're painting on. Aside from that, though, it has the best brush customizing of probably any paint program. If you don't find a brush you like in the built-in libraries, look into making your own. Just keep the brush opacity about halfway down and get ready to do a lot of scratching!

I am impressed and humbled by Nakano's work every time I examine it What I really think is amazing is the difference between his work from OoT to TP. Can't believe it was the same person!

StephaniaArts In reply to Nendil [2010-05-18 17:33:55 +0000 UTC]

yeah I know, that is the only feature that really sucks in PS >>' ah well might as well try to make the best of it heheh
I'm thinking into making my own brush, Do you think a standard hard round brush with halfway low opacity will do the trick?
and while drawing the scratches, I am guessing I should work zoomed in with a relativly small brush yes? Lastly, After having done the base and shading, do I make a new layer and paint over (cover it) all with hte scratches or should I make it like in overlay mode or transperant in some way?

Thank you so much for answering my questions

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nendil In reply to StephaniaArts [2010-05-19 00:36:19 +0000 UTC]

I would recommend checking out the "Natural Brushes" library that comes with Photoshop - there's a lot of rough brushes in there that would be easier than drawing each stroke individually And you can start out doing smaller scratches, but in the end you should go over the top lightly with some larger strokes to blend things together.

As for the layering - I dunno, just experiment and see what works for you! You could (and probably should) even use a combination of different methods - as long as you break up the large areas so they don't look too regular in color, strokes, etc.

I look forward to seeing how this method works out for you
