Mako's focus was already decreasing in Book 3.Β
It seems like without the love triangle drama, the writers really don't know how to make him interesting. Which just goes to show how much of a boring character he is.

Or how much the writers really didn't know how to develop him. They even MENTION it in his flashback. Which is sad, because, hello? He can bend LIGHTNING? He's an orphan-turned-Probender-turned-policeman? With a strict attitude to justice? You could make a SERIES out of the Republic City police department! Maybe call it "Mako Mysteries"!
Nah, that title doesn't work. BUT THERE'S TONS THAT COULD BE DONE IF THEY TRIED IT OUT!

Exactly. When first introduced, I pegged Mako as the one who would be my favorite character. But he ended up being my least favorite. Really fast. Hell, him even becoming a cop came out of no where. Yeah, he already showed he would be capable of such a job but it was never hinted that it was what he wanted to become or was going to want to become. He didn't have any interaction with Lin in the first season. And for some reason he had already reached the rank of detective despite being the rookie. And because of this, despite the fact that I normally like cop/detective characters, it just sounds near silly to me whenever Mako tries to act like all... cop-ish... like how he seemed to take every chance he got to remind us that he was a cop.
It's like you said, on paper, Mako sounded like a pretty cool character. But the was he was executed was just... ugh... so boring and sometimes pretentious.

Just one of the many ways they messed up their characters in Korra. Aside from that, making somebody a cop in the Avatarasya is a pretty good way to mess up their romantic lives in terms of long-term relationships (I'm thinking of a certain Beifong here).

Yup. Though Lin's relationships were ruined not just by her being a cop. She is implied to have not wanted a family, and Tenzin did.
And as for he relationship with her sister... I'll be honest and say Su really screwed that one up, but Lin wouldn't get over it while Su (years later) tried to work things out.

Nah. I'd say those problems stemmed from just her own personal issues with her mom. Being a cop was just one of those things.
But you do have a point. It seems like the series just likes to portray cops are either incompetent or miserable.
