I'm having the toughest time trying to find this skink in my animal encyclopedia and I'm very unhappy about that. He looks just like a pink-tailed skink, but his tail is very obviously blue! And I think he may be a five-lined skink, but I only have a black and white drawing of one of those, so I have no idea if his colouring is right to be one! Bah!Oh, and..

It is either a five-line or a broad-head. Broad-heads have 5 labial(lip) scales on each side, with one on the snout and 4 uneven ones after that, while the 5-line has 4 slightly more even scales. The broad-headed skink may have a broader head, but this is usually only evident in adult males. Five-lined skinks are slightly smaller, but otherwise are very hard to tell apart just by looks. Behavior-wise, five-lined skinks tend to be more terrestrial than broad-heads, which frequently climb trees and bark. Broad-heads tend to be more southerly lizards as well. The skink in this picture is probably between 0 and 2 months old. The tail fades to gray-blue or brown when adult, and stripes fade to light brown or even disappear in adult males. Males of both species will develop a red-orange head when adult.
