Description
Finally finished the Muton fanart. Original one, not the spaceork-like powerarmor wearing ape from new X-com.Related content

I have to give you mate. This is probably the most badass rendition of an OldCom Muton i've ever seen. I'd have been thrilled if the NuCom Mutons had looked like this.

I was quite dissapointed in Muton design in new X-Com. It was the most generic random alien in powerarmor I seen in long time. No doubt worst design in the whole game.

It made me think of the Brutes from Halo crossed with Orks from 40k. And not in a good way. I don't mind the design in the end, but they don't really feel like Mutons to me.
I always thought of Mutons more as XCOM's direct opposite, well trained specialist troops who made up for their lack of psychic abilities with some of the aliens best equipment.

Like your take on the skin design, originally it was just a thin tight green skin thin suit the 94 mutons wore, here it looks to be grafted round, a skin that's shedding and regrowing. The detail is quite good, what was your take on the muton in this drawing?

Well in the autopsy is written that his skin is an organic armor grafted onto body. It's not specified if it's the green part or pink part. And I liked the idea that it's a part of the body. Better than the generic power armor from new X-Com.
I wanted to make a nice, high quality image true to the original versions, just slightly redesigned to look more menacing and modern. I am still struggling with the Ethereal. The robe just looks too goofy and not alien enough.

Unfortunatelyy the ethereal is a very generic clichΓ© of a mysterious alien, maybe you can get around that by having other elements that can interact with its insidious nature, one or two mind controlled xcom soldiers perhaps. Or have it levitate, which I suppose is the more accurate outtake as they appear so fragile that its amazing they can walk to begin with.
I do like the mutons in the remake for their sheer difficulty but agree that the power armor is nothing striking but then with a new team on a project comes with new ideas. Though I like your take it looks advanced and not hinder on the Muton's staggering physique, it makes it look the alien version of elite troops and not a big angry grunt.

It's quite amazing that the original team on old X-Com ended up with such memorable designs since the graphics were kinda secondary matter to them. They didn't have a stable graphic so it was more or less a coincidence. It may also explain some of the inconsistencies for example in the weapon design.
I have some ideas for the ethereal, but I just can't pinpoint the right one. I will post some WIP of older versions in scraps later.
