Description Had a bit of free time tonight, so I went ahead and did a few quick charcoals of the character I plan to eventually use in a KotOR role play.

This was the only one I felt was good enough to upload. So enjoy.

Love the facial expression, reminds me of a girl I know. Amazing how simple strokes can stimulate my head.

I like this one one thing i have trouble with is anatomy and from the looks of this it seems like you did a good job.

Most anatomy is just a matter of proportion...eyes halfway down the head and one eyelength apart, ears same length and height as the nose, mouth from one center of the eye to the other. The only thing I regret here is not rendering the sternocleidomastoid muscle as well as I should have.

ahhhhhhh

Yea i know the basics of anatomy. But to truly draw something accurately you have to understand the underlying bonestructures and cartilge and muscle contractions.

It gets complicated fast

Not necessarily. You can get away with a lot with implication rather than rendition

When it came to learning realism and how they draw what they do. Top artists gave me tutorials and such and in tutorials they tell you to practice drawing bone structures. They had to jsut draw skeletons and make them in different positions. Then after that when it came to drawing something lets say emotion in the face. you need to understand how the muscles contract when somone cry's or else it doesnt look realistic or "sad". But thats realism, it gets heavy, eventually i want to be accurate like that.

I think you may find Rohens "Color Atlas of Anatomy: very helpful then, though it is more for anatomists and medical students rather than artists. It is...not for the faint of heart though.

Personally, I don't have the patience for realism, so I tend to draw away from it outside of classes.

you used photoshop for this one?!

Nephenee In reply to rabeemohamed [2012-05-17 14:29:33 +0000 UTC]

Nah, this is charcoal and white pastel/charcoal on construction paper. Traditional art all the way.

This one is kind of a combination digital and traditional [link] and this one is all digital [link]

I used GIMP on those, which is the poor man's photoshop.

Really interesting. I love how there is black, white, and then a vivid colour. The expression is done well. It looks like she is startled. I like the sketchy style

Toned paper is a TON of fun to work with, especially in black and white. I was originally attempting to push the expression further, but it was such a confuzzled look I couldn't help but leave it as is.

Thank you.

Must get some!

You're welcome. So, is that a white charcoal pencil? Next time I go to an art store, I'm definitely getting me that! It looks like it could be a useful tool for highlights.

Nephenee In reply to furawatchi23 [2009-12-21 02:38:50 +0000 UTC]

This was seriously on just some cheap construction paper.

Yeah, white charcoal pencil and white pastel. And yes, an awesome for highlights.

However, the only problem is that you need to watch the inbetween areas, or you can get some really muddy grays.

at the title of this. This is one of the names I plan on naming one of my future babies! I love how you did this on a peachy-pink paper so that there was a natural skin glow about her. The eyes looking up are awesome!
