Description
Geckles are a closed species!
(Of course, we don't own little lizards with rocks on! But the visual design choices and story/lore that are specific to geckles are very much ours.)
Mod Update: COMMON-FEATURED GECKLES are now open! Grab whatever Common features you like and have fun! We've been busy with life stuff and would love you to still have fun with our little gem lizards until we're able to come back! <3
MORE ABOUT GECKLES
Appearance: Geckles are small, chunky reptiles that grow crystals on the tips of their tails and in patches all over their bodies. They have rounded snouts and large, expressive eyes. These gem lizards are really quite dinky! An average adult geckle measures 4-5 inches from snout to tail. Naturally, there is variation, and captive-bred geckles are occasionally bred for larger- or smaller-than-usual size.
Geckles have chunky, gecko-like tails. Their forelegs are flared as they approach the foot - there's no visual distinction between where the leg ends and their pudgy feet begin! Geckle toes are small, flat and slightly in-turned, and may or may not have claws.
Crystals: The crystals that grow on a geckle's body are the source of its magic power. If the mineral exists, a geckle might have it growing on its body. Crystalline minerals are most typical, with quartzes being a very common variety; more uncommon are rocky formations, rare gemstones, and things like silver or gold (which are, as one can imagine, rather sought-after)!
All geckles grow crystals on the tips of their tails. The average geckle tends to have crystals along its back and on its head, but the exact location, size, and number of these crystals varies a lot from individual to individual! Technically, crystals can grow anywhere on a geckle's body, but it's very rare for them to grow on the belly, throat, or around the eyes or mouth. Sometimes it does happen, though!
Geckle crystals aren't impervious to damage, and can be worn, chipped, and broken just like a regular crystal or mineral of that type can be. This means certain types of geckles need special care - gypsum and selenite geckles are at risk of crystal damage from water, for example. Crystal damage doesn't hurt the geckle physically, but will have a detrimental affect on that geckle's ability to use magic proportional to the amount of wear.
Crystals + Magic: The type and size of crystal a geckle grows dictates its magic abilities. The majority of geckles cannot perform active magic - their powers are limited to passive effects like bestowing luck (with money, or love, or simple generalised luckiness), having a calming or energising effect on people around them, or minor healing powers.
However, geckles with particularly large crystal outcroppings may be able to perform small magical feats at will! A powerful angelite geckle might be able to manifest ethereal wings, a powerful pyrite geckle may be able to perform small acts of transmutation. There are other, more generic magic abilities that almost any particularly gifted geckle might posess - for example, levitation or basic telepathy.
When using magic (actively or passively) a geckle's crystals will glow or produce some other sign of magic.
Temperament: As a species, geckles are quite sociable! They're surprisingly intelligent and typically unafraid of humans (making them perfect for domestication) - they often approach humans without prompting. Geckles with particular crystal types often exhibit common temperaments - rose quartz geckles tend to be placid and affectionate, for example, while citrine geckles are generally quite active and full of energy.
Of course, personalities vary from individual to individual! It's far from unknown for a geckle to go against type - cowardly bloodstones, sullen sunstones, boistrous larimars. Each one of these little lizards has a character of its own, after all.
Habitat and Diet: Wild geckles are rather adaptable creatures, making their homes anywhere they find appropriate. They typically have a preference for caves or underground spaces, particularly if the area is abundant in their source mineral.
Geckles are primarily herbivorous, enjoying leafy plants and berries. They occasionally consume small quantities of rock, and their source crystal if they have access to it. If a geckle with damaged crystals eats enough of their source mineral, they are capable of regenerating the crystals on their body over time.
Geckles and Humans: Wild geckles often approach and bond with humans. Their ability to taste human auras allows them to seek out individuals with whom they're compatible - usually based on how beneficial the geckle's magic would be to that particular person! Because of this, there are many domesticated geckles, and the offspring of domestically raised geckles are often sold as pets and familiars.
Geckles' long lifespans (100-150 years on average) make the care of a domestic geckle a lifelong commitment, and pet geckles are often passed down family lines almost like heirlooms!
Humans keep geckles for a variety of reasons - companionship, as magical assistants, and often for their magical properties that benefit the owner (be that as a good luck charm, or to encourage good health, or calming effects). They are popular decorative pets - a sparkling emerald geckle perched on one's shoulder or riding in one's hat can look very pretty, after all!
Domestic geckles often have their crystals modified for aesthetics - smoothed and polished 'tumblestone' geckles are popular. Horned geckles may have their horns carved into a variety of shapes and patterns, at the cost of a little of their magic power.
If you're interested in owning a little crystal lizard of your own, we will be holding auctions soon and will be offering customs some time in the near future!

Customs will probably be at a flat rate (a lower rate for customs using a base and a higher one for a freshly drawn custom pose), and our upcoming auctions will have an autobuy option set to $50 if that counts, although that's a lot higher than any of the customs rates we're thinking of? We're still working things out at the moment so I can't give you a very good estimate yet.
Once we've got our first auction running, we'll put together some info on custom options and post it in a journal. (:

I want a geckle! I love the design and everything about them. I definitely want one.
Does "closed species" mean that one cannot alter it? I'm not big on the adoptables scene.
Great job creating this, both of you.

Thank you so much! (Lovely to see you here, by the way, haha!) I'm really glad you like them. c:
Basically, the difference between closed and open species is that people need the artist's permission to create their own character of a closed species, but don't need it for an open species. How much you're allowed to alter a closed species adoptable you've bought/won/made is generally down to the artist.

Oh okay. So if you're making an open species, I can make my own character of your species. With the same lore and everything. That would make sense.

Oh wow, this is really cool! I was considering to make a closed species with minerals (they would have been mammals) but I am really glad I didn't - you do so much more justice drawing minerals than I could have. I hope I will be able to get a Geckle of my own :3

Gosh, thank you so much! You should absolutely still make your own mineral species if you have an idea, your designs are incredibly cute and I'm sure you'd make something great! The world needs more mineral critters if you ask me. c: And thank you for your interest in geckles! We'll hopefully have auctions and potentially customs up and running pretty soon.

Haha, thank you very much! Mod Nerbles is 100% the one to thank for that particular bit of lore (well, most of the lore!) - I really liked that idea too!
