I think most true Gohan fans are fine with him being a scholar actually? It's more about how they disregarded the character they built up in the first place after so many re-dos.
It's a well-known fact Gohan only actively fights so he can protect his loved ones. I didn't blame him for letting himself go after Cell games-going into the Boo Saga, but after that big surprise, it should've been obvious that he'd always need to be prepared for the worst if he ever wanted to be strong enough to ensure his family's safety. He didn't need to go absolutely nuts like his dad and Vegeta but a day at the gym won't kill anyone.
But then they did Super and ruined all his character development, which is why I am not interested. The DB storyline lacks a lot of common sense, but it's a show about super powered monkey's so I don't get why people get angry over it either.
